Read Option: Buying Barrett & JPP?
I think Barrett and Pierre-Paul are going to be a real treat to watch for the rest of the season, and I think they are only going to help each other out in terms of potential production.
But pay day for both of these men is coming, and unfortunately for the Buccaneers, it’s coming at the same time. It’s also coming for Carl Nassib in 2020.

Due to the restructuring of Pierre-Paul’s deal, he will become a free agent in 2020. His contract previously was set to expire in 2021, but that is no longer the case. This offseason Pierre-Paul, who became the first player since Simeon Rice to record double digit sacks for the Buccaneers last season, will be 31 years old with a hand injury and a neck injury in his recent history.
But what if he produces? Is he worth being paid as a Top 10 edge rusher?
On the other hand, Barrett, who is on just a one-year $4 million deal this season, will be just 27 and will be coming off the best season of his career – likely at or near the top of the NFL’s sack list. He might cost the price of a Top 5 edge rusher.
Pierre-Paul has way more sustained success, even if he is older, but Shaq is the new model with potentially a longer shelf life at top production.
So who do you pay? Do you think the Bucs can keep both? And what about Nassib?
With Jameis Winston and Nadamukong Suh and Demar Dotson’s contracts up, and Vernon Hargreaves III, William Gholston, Cam Brate and even Lavonte David’s contract flexible enough to move on, who might you sacrifice to keep these two, if you would at all?
What do you think happens with JPP and Barrett this offseason?
Tell me what you hope will happen and then what you think will really happen. Maybe it’s the same.
