The Cowboys suffered a major blow when Pro Bowl left tackle Tyron Smith suffered a torn hamstring injury in practice on Wednesday. He will be out several months and will miss the season opener against the visiting Bucs. Both teams will square off in Dallas on Sunday Night Football at 8:20 p.m. ET on September 11. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the injury diagnosis just after midnight.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport had more specifics on the injury.
#Cowboys standout LT Tyron Smith actually suffered an avulsion fracture of the knee, meaning the hamstring tendon that sits at the back of the knee pulled off the bone and he needs surgery, sources say. If he’s back at all, it’ll be December. A tough loss.

Smith, 31, is an eight-time Pro Bowler (2013-19, 2021) and a four-time All-Pro (2013-16) is a member of the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team. He’s still considered to be one of the best left tackles in the game. The Cowboys are expected to consider moving first-round pick Tyler Smith from guard to left tackle to replace the veteran.
New England is also trying to trade left tackle Isaiah Wynn, a former first-round draft pick, who has underperformed. Wynn might be an option for the Cowboys considering Smith will likely be out several months.
This injury could bode well for Bucs outside linebackers Shaquil Barrett and Joe Tryon-Shoyinka. Barrett, a two-time Pro Bowler, has feasted against backup tackles in the past. In 2020, Barrett recorded three sacks against the Packers, who were missing their starting offensive tackles. In the next game against Kansas City, who was also missing its starting tackles, Barrett had a sack and multiple pressures in Super Bowl LV.
Other Cowboys Injuries
Smith isn’t the only starter the Cowboys will be without when the Bucs come to town. Starting wide receiver Michael Gallup suffered a torn ACL on January 2 on a touchdown catch against Arizona. While he won’t start the season on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list, he won’t suit up in Week 1 as he continues his recovery from injury.
Cowboys nickel cornerback Jourdan Lewis is recovering from a hamstring injury that has caused him to miss some of training camp. He is expected to be ready to play in Week 1.
