Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich was listed as a candidate to interview for the vacant head coaching job of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Now he has a date set and it’s coming ASAP.

According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Leftwich will be interviewing with Jacksonville on Friday for the opportunity to be their next head coach. The Jaguars fired first-year NFL coach Urban Meyer on December 16 after a 2-11 record and multiple incidents on and off the field.

Per Fowler, the Jaguars requested permission from the Bucs to conduct the interview before the end of the regular season.

One year ago, head coach Bruce Arians was angry that Leftwich didn’t receive any interviews despite the fact that he helped the Bucs win Super Bowl LV. This year, he’s highly sought after as he runs an offense that leads the league in yards per game (405.8) and passing yards per game (306.6), also ranking second in the NFL in points per game with 29.4.

Leftwich is in his third season as the Bucs offensive coordinator. He previously was a quarterbacks coach for the Cardinals for two seasons starting back in 2017 and then was promoted to interim offensive coordinator in 2018.

There is built in ties between Leftwich and the Jaguars franchise. He was selected seventh overall by the Jags in 2003 and played there for the first four seasons of his nine-year career.
