The Bucs hired Seahawks quarterbacks coach Dave Canales to become Tampa Bay’s new offensive coordinator. Canales has spent almost the entirety of his coaching career in Seattle working with Pete Carroll. The soon-to-be 42-year-old Canales spent his first eight seasons with the Seahawks as their wide receivers coach before moving to quarterbacks coach for the 2018 and 2019 seasons.
He became the passing game coordinator for the following two seasons, including the 2020 season which was the height of the “Let Russ Cook” phenomenon surrounding former Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. In 2022 Canales moved back to quarterbacks coach and helped Geno Smith revive his stalled career and turn into a top-10 quarterback in the NFL, as well as a Pro Bowler.
Dave Canales Mic’d Up With Seahawks
The Seahawks mic’d up Canales on a couple of occasions during his time in Seattle. The first of which was when Canales was a wide receivers coach six years ago. Watch the upbeat Canales interact with the Seahawks receivers during the offseason.
The second mic’d up video in Seattle took place four years ago when Dave Canales was the Seahawks quarterbacks coach. It’s a look at his energetic, vocal coaching style working with Russell Wilson and Seattle’s other QBs.
Dave Canales Opens Up About His Personal Life, Faith
Canales was also a guest on Beyond The Game with former Bucs and Colts head coach Tony Dungy one year ago when he was with Seattle. It’s a very revealing look at Canales’ rise up the coaching ranks from his first job at USC under Pete Carroll through his days in Seattle.
Canales opens up with Dungy about some of the mistakes he made earlier in his coaching days and in his personal life. He talks about his faith and his sobriety with Dungy and how that has made Canales a better coach.
As if the interview with Tony Dungy wasn’t open enough, back in 2017 Dave Canales revealed even more details about the painful, yet uplifting reconciliation of his marriage, and becoming a Christian for a short documentary for his alma mater, Azusa Pacific.
