Quarterback Baker Mayfield signed with the Bucs on Wednesday to a 1-year deal that can get all the way up to $8.5 million.  That doesn’t mean he’ll necessarily reach all that money (though the Bucs hope that he does) as half of it is through incentives.

NFL reporter Aaron Wilson provided the details of Baker Mayfield and the contract he just signed. Mayfield will get $4 million guaranteed, with $2 million as a base salary and the other coming as a roster bonus. The other $4.5 million are incentives based on playing time, passing stats and a postseason appearance.

QB Competition Between Baker Mayfield & Kyle Trask

Mayfield’s move to Tampa has been newsworthy around the city. A lot of conversation has been generated by Bucs fans both in support and against the deal. For those excited about it, this doesn’t mean Mayfield is the opening game starter when Tampa Bay begins the regular season.

Remember, there’s a reason Mayfield was available in free agency. The 2020 season was his best year, and final season with the Browns. Injury and then poor play has cost him greatly and he played for two different teams last year because of it, going from the Bucs’ NF .

And to be fair, Mayfield did find a spark at the end of the season, so coming to Tampa and working with Dave Canales might be exactly what he needs.

It will be an open competition between Mayfield and Kyle Trask during training camp. Trask is going into his third season with very little playing experience.

Each player is learning a new offense this seasons and will get the opportunity to work with Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Rachaad White amongst others. Canales’ offense is supposed to be quarterback friendly, which will benefit the potential starting contenders. It will be the number one competition that everyone will be paying attention to when practice gets going in the summer.
