No one seems to know if Chris Godwin is going to be available for the Bucs in Week 1 against the Cowboys. And apparently, Chris Godwin doesn’t know either.

Godwin was a guest this week on the “In The Moment” podcast with David Greene, where he was asked a series of questions highlighting his career. When the conversation turned to his recovery from a torn ACL and when he’d expect to be playing, Godwin was unsure.

“That’s a great question,” Godwin said. “I don’t think any of us know that yet. There’s some stuff that circulates and half the time I’m like ‘I have no idea where these people got this from.’ Really, the people that know the most about my process is me firstly, my wife and my PT [physical trainer].”

Godwin Eased Back Into Practice

The Bucs have been pretty tight lipped about whether he’s going to play in Week 1. Todd Bowles said that their star receiver has progressed, but they won’t actually know until he gets hit below the waist in a game.

He made his return to practice on Aug. 5 in the second week of training camp. Tampa Bay has slowly moved Godwin along in the offense. It began with just warming up with the quarterbacks to being in 7-0n-7 drills and eventually getting in with the whole group. Even still, Godwin has practiced with a non-contact jersey on, indicating no decision has been made yet.

“I definitely have a say, I would imagine I have the final say,” Godwin said. “It’s all going to come down to feel because I understand what I’m capable of doing on the field when healthy. But I also understand what I’m capable of pushing through. Like I said, most guys aren’t healthy after a couple weeks of the season. Most of them in my career have been playing through something. So I knew that I can do that at a high level, it’s just a matter of doing it, because of what I have just experienced, doing it the smartest way that I can.”

It’s The Long Game For Godwin

Godwin has the long run in mind during his recovery. It’s not about being ready for the season opener, but better yet being available for the playoff push.

“I don’t think it matters,” Godwin said about being ready for Week 1.” In the grand scheme, it doesn’t matter that much. I would love to be there for the entire season, but I think what’s more important is being there for the second half of the season. Being there for what I missed last year.

“I push to get back as soon as I can while being smart at the same time. There’s the competitor in me, I want to be there for the whole season, I want to be there with my guys. I want to do the most that I can to put me in the best position to succeed this season.”

Asked point blank to put a percentage on the possibility of a Week 1 start, he did not give in.

“I don’t know if I have a percentage on it, to be honest,” Godwin said. “The way I operate is I’m so focused on what I have to do right now that if I spend much energy projecting too far into the future, there’s a chance that I can miss something right now. I put in so much work and I’ve never been through this before, so I don’t specifically know what the feeling is going to be like when I’m like ‘Yo, I’m ready.'”

Godwin Wants More Than One Championship

Whether it’s Week 1 or a month from now, the Bucs are getting motivated Godwin. Already a Super Bowl champion, he spoke about not being satisfied with just one, and there more titles to be won.

“Every year brings new challenges,” Godwin said. “I didn’t get into this to be a champion one time. Every time I go out there, every season even before we won it, this is going to be the year. And I think that’s still going to be a thing that drives me. I’m not one of those people that I achieve a goal one time and is like ‘Alright, I’m good.’ Because if that was the case, then I could’ve just walked off there.”
