In a season full of absurd penalties against the Bucs, Sunday offered another. With the Bucs trailing 17-3, Tom Brady had the team on the move into Rams’ territory. After an 8-yard completion to Mike Evans, Brady was blatantly illegally hit by Von Miller. The Rams edge rusher went helmet first into Brady’s chin, splitting the quarterback’s lip.

When no flag was thrown, Brady turned to referee Shawn Hochuli, irate. While Brady’s frustration was clear, it didn’t seem distinguishable from countless other moments of anger with officiating over his career. But Hochuli immediately flagged the star quarterback for unsportsmanlike conduct.

“He got in my face in an aggressive manner and used abusive language,” Hochuli said. “As for the hit, we did not think that it rose to the level of roughing the passer.”

So Hochuli blew the call, then flagged the player bleeding from the hit? Players get upset about blown calls all the time. It’s rare to see it rise to the level of a foul from a verbal interaction with the officials. The penalty was one of three personal fouls against the Bucs in the game. Ndamukong Suh was penalized for taunting, and Lavonte David for taking his helmet off after a play.

After the game, Brady didn’t want to comment on the interaction with Hochuli.

“I’d get fined if I said something,” Brady quipped.
