It didn’t look good when Bucs running back Giovani Bernard was down on the ground for an extended period of time in Sunday’s 33-27 overtime win against the Bills, and the results seem to be telling the same story a day later. Bernard left the game in the second quarter due to a hip injury. Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network is reporting that Bernard also suffered an MCL injury that could see him miss a couple of weeks.

Bernard slowly walked off the field with the help of trainers and was then carted back to the locker room. Bruce Arians provided an update on Monday saying that he was getting an MRI at the time. He played in seven snaps on offense before exiting.
It’ll be interesting to see how the Bucs divvy up the snaps at running back moving forward. Leonard Fournette has been the bell cow for Tampa Bay and he can play all three downs, though Bernard would also handle third down responsibilities on occasion. Ronald Jones II has been used in a backup role to give Fournette some rest on offensive drives, but Fournette has flourished as a receiving back as well. That is an aspect of the game that is considered to be a weakness for Jones.
The Bucs also have second-year running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn, who has carved out a role on special teams this season. If the Bucs aren’t ready to trust Vaughn yet in various situations at running back, they could rely on Jones a bit more than in previous weeks on early downs to keep Fournette fresh on other drives when he’ll play all three downs in versatile ways.
Bernard has rushed eight times for 58 and yards and made 23 receptions for 123 yards and three touchdowns on the season.
