Wednesdays are normally pretty active around One Buc Place no matter what day it is, but this particular Wednesday there was a feeling of new in the air, as Tampa Bay Buccaneers interim defensive coordinator Mark Duffner addressed the media for the first time since taking the position earlier this week.

Duffner said that, though no one expected this to happen, just like being a backup player, you always have to be ready for greater responsibility to be put on your plate, if such actions occur to where it is necessary.
Duffner said all he’s doing is the job that has been placed before him and that he’s going to do it to the best of his ability.

Duffner was asked how he was going to fix the broken defense the Buccaneers have been trotting out for the last three weeks. He said that they are “very engaged” in trying to do what they’re going to need to do to turn things around — though he didn’t give specifics, as to not tip their hand too much to any changes that might be coming.

A refreshing phrase from Duffner was that he said his philosophy is to “play defense as aggressively as you possibly can.”
Now, he said that doesn’t necessarily mean all-out blitzing and unlimited pressure. He said that being aggressive can be playing smart or with focus or energy. But whatever they do they want to be the ones to put the pressure on the offense.

Duffner was also asked whether or not he’d be coaching from the box or from the sideline and he said that he would be remaining on the sideline.
He said that there isn’t too much difference with it, it’s just a matter of preference, and he prefers to be on the field with his guys.

Last, Duffner talked about his attitude towards life and towards coaching. When asked about him to his players, they all seemed to say the word “positive” when describing him. Duffner is a guy with a lot of energy, but it’s positive energy.
He said that, in football and in life, you have to work hard but you have to remember to enjoy it, too.

Back in the locker room, the Bucs player were asked about the move of their defensive coordinator.
Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul said that sometimes change is good — and reminded the media that change is the reason why he’s in Tampa.

JPP was also asked about the attitude and approach you have to have as a team coming off a losing streak like the one the Bucs are currently on. He said that there’s nothing you can do about the past, so you just have to let it go.
He also said the goal of this team is still to make the playoffs.

From an outlook standpoint, JPP was also asked about the Cleveland Browns, who are coming into town for Sunday’s game.
Their quarterback, Baker Mayfield, is a rookie this season, and Pierre-Paul said he’s very excited to get to go against a rookie…

At the end of the day, Koetter also described Duffner as defensive coordinator.
