It may not have been a victory Monday anymore, but on Wednesday at one One Buc Place you could still feel the effects of the team’s 26-23 victory over the Cleveland Browns.
It all started with defensive coordinator Mark Duffner, who took to the podium first in the morning session.

The first question for Duffner was to give a general overview of his defense’s performance against the Browns.
He said that the defense played with a lot of energy and urgency, and that was something that was needed. He also said that the execution was “a step in the right direction”, which is better than we’ve been able to say in week’s past.
Duffner said that generating turnovers is the next step for this defense.

We were told earlier this week that the Buccaneers simplified their defensive playbook after the Bye Week, and it seems to be helping the players play with more instinct and less thinking. Duffner said the chemistry between each unit better and that has allowed the players to play to their strengths more.

Duffner was also, of course, asked about Kwon Alexander’s injury and what it meant to the team. Duffner said it’s unfortunate that the team has to go on without him because of how much energy and passion Alexander brings to the team.
Duffner said that they are lucky to have a guy like Lavonte David on the team who has the ability to step up in an even bigger role now that Alexander is down, but also said that it will be on Ardarius Taylor and the rest of the defense to step up, too.

One of the members of the defense that will be slated to help pick up the slack of Alexander going down is defensive tackle Beau Allen.
Allen was asked about the loss of Alexander as a whole and, as expected, said it’s a bummer that they have to go on without him. But, as Duffner stated, this just means they have to go out and do their jobs better for him, as he would want them to do.

One of the players who could potentially be picking up some of Alexander’s direct work is linebacker Kendell Beckwith. Beckwith is still sidelined from the surgery he suffered in a car accident during the offseason.
Once Beckwith gets back to practicing, it will likely be an extra week before he can get out there and play in a game. With it being almost 10 months now since Beckwith last played a game, there is surely to be some rust. But Beckwith, being a linebacker, could be poised to step right into this defense, when healthy again.

Bucs defensive lineman Jason Pierre-Paul said that the only response to losing a guy like Alexander is for the rest of the guys on the team to “play even harder.”
Pierre-Paul, who has already made his fair share of plays this year with six sacks, said that every man has to make the plays in front of them.

Pierre-Paul was also asked about the team’s “row the boat” celebration after they stood the Browns up on the goal line on fourth down late in the game on Sunday.
“We was just having fun,” Pierre-Paul said. “I don’t know who started it, but I just saw one of the DBs sit down and start rowing the boat and I just joined in.”
#Bucs HC Dirk Koetter talks about the history and relationship he has with Bengals coach Marvin Lewis. They were in each other’s wedding pic.twitter.com/EhbT0rtd7m
— PewterReport (@PewterReport) October 24, 2018
After practice Koetter shared an intersting journey that he and Bengals coach Marvin Lewis have had over the years. The two have a friendship that began when they went to the same college and played on the same team. Lewis even introduced Koetter to his wife. He said they were both in each other’s weddings and have a good relationship. He explains even more in the video above.
But Koetter also said that on Sunday, Lewis is still the enemy.
We’ll be back tomorrow with another jam-packed day at One Buc.
