It was the Bucs last Thursday practice of the season, which means their last practice in shoulder pads. While the Bucs immediate future is against the Falcons at home on Sunday, many have already started looking towards the offseason and what the future holds for next season.
That started off with an early report this morning that WR DeSean Jackson would like to go elsewhere after this season, with a further story that he and HC Dirk Koetter had an exchange after the 49ers game one month ago. In the locker room today, Jackson declined to speak, but Koetter was asked at the podium about his thoughts on this report, and his relationship with the veteran receiver.

Jackson will all but certainly be on the move before next season, meaning the Bucs will have to reassess their receiver depth. The absence of Jackson from weeks 13-15 gave more playing time to rookie WR Justin Watson, and particularly second year player Bobo Wilson.
Given the similar speed, Wilson has played some roles that were Jackson’s responsibilities as a receiver. Wilson has also become the starting kick returner, and has had three tackles on special teams. Koetter spoke about both Watson’s job during his first year, and how Wilson is utilizing his skill.
Koetter said that Watson’s biggest problem right now is just the talent in front of him in the receiver group.

The coach has been impressed with Wilson’s play on special teams.

Moving on from all the discussion about wide receivers old and new, it was time to head to the locker room portion of practice.
In nine years in the NFL, DT Gerald McCoy has never made the playoffs. He has been at the top of his position for a very long time, but ultimately it’s a team game. This will be another season in which he doesn’t make the postseason, but he took the high road about playing this last game, saying that it’s a blessing.

The final game of this year may possible be McCoy’s final one as a Bucs player. He is supposed to get $13 million next year at 31 years old. With questions about a regime change, that could effect McCoy, who answered if he’s thought about if this could be the last time he puts on the red and pewter and plays with these teammates.

Last up was QB Jameis Winston to speak with the media. Right off the bat he, just like Koetter, was asked about the reports surrounding DeSean Jackson. Winston said that he’s been a good teammate, and doesn’t know much about the story.

Winston’s contract option was picked up for next year, but it’s unsure whether his head coach would be back for it as well. The signs are pointing that it won’t happen, but Winston discussed how much Koetter has helped him during his career.

It’s been a crazy year for Winston, who had a kid over the summer, got suspended, returned to start, was benched, and became the starter again all in one season. Though all of it, he has still become a leader, just in a different way. Winston explained how that is, and also that his competitiveness remains the same.

That will do it from Bucs practice today. Now we’ll see if the team can end on a bit of positive note in 2018 before changes are made.
