Failing to move the chains on its last three possessions during the deflating 30-24 overtime loss to the Raiders, the Bucs offense kept Bryan Anger busy last Sunday. And he delivered.
Along with hitting three punts for over 40 yards in the fourth quarter and overtime, Anger also put the ball inside the 20-yard line twice in the first half, including one that pinned Oakland on its own 1-yard line. In all, Anger punted eight times for a net average of 41.4 yards.
The fifth-year punter’s performance, along with trusted gunners Russell Shepard and Josh Robinson, didn’t go unnoticed by head coach Dirk Koetter.
“He’s doing a great job,” Koetter said of Anger. “We didn’t turn the ball over yesterday, which was a good thing, but we had five three-and-outs on the day. And so when you’re not holding onto the ball and making first downs, at least we were able to flip field position.
“Our punter, Bryan, and those two gunners [Russell Shepard and Josh Robinson], those guys are just playing lights out right now. Could not be happier. Bryan, [Special Teams Coordinator Nate] Kaczor has asked him to work hard on matching his hang time to his distance. He’s done that. His placement has been good. And then [cornerback Josh] Robinson and ‘Shep’ [wide receiver Russell Shepard], those guys as gunners are really doing a great job getting down there, even when they’re doubled.”
Anger currently ranks fifth among punters in net average (42.6), with 16 of his 38 punts pinning opponents inside the 20-yard line. He’s been consistent all season, but Sunday might have been his best effort. For that, Anger is this week’s Just Grillin Pewter Player of the Week and will receive a $50 gift certificate to Just Grillin in Carrollwood.
