This week’s Just Grillin performer could’ve been given to a number of players following the Bucs convincing, 36-10 win over the Bears last Sunday – but the importance of a strong start cannot be overstated and, for that reason, PewterReport.com is awarding Chris Conte.

The safety got the best of his former team early, jumping a route in the first quarter to intercept Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler’s screen and take it back to the end zone for six points.

Exuberant after his first career pick-six, Conte couldn’t even temper the celebration when met by his head coach on the sideline. He accidently head-butted Dirk Koetter, breaking the coach’s glasses and giving him a small cut above the eyebrow.

“I told him he must not have scored many touchdowns in his life,” Koetter joked the next day, “if you’ve got to head-butt a guy with no helmet on.”

Koetter will take the small wound every week though, if it means his defense is scoring touchdowns.

“I told him he can do it again next week if he gets another pick-six (laughs),” he said.

The pick, aided by linebacker Daryl Smith’s pressure, gave Tampa Bay a 7-0 lead and set the tone for a dominant defensive outing.

Conte, who is tied with Bradley McDougald for the second team-lead in tackles (51) this season, added seven more to his count Sunday. The defense held the Bears to 182 yards through the air, most of which came off a 50-yard Hail Mary to end the half, and 116 yards out of the backfield.

But Conte’s pick-6 set the stage for the complete defensive performance, making him Week 10’s Just Grillin Pewter Player of the Week and the recipient of a $50 gift certificate to Just Grillin in Carrollwood.
