The Bucs went and drafted SMU defensive lineman Elijah Roberts in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. There was some thought at first that the Bucs drafted another edge rusher, but the plan for Tampa Bay is to play Roberts on the defensive line. He’s a versatile player that can do so, and fits better there at the NFL level.

A common trend for the Bucs this year has been drafting the character of the person as much as the caliber of player. Elijah Roberts was a team captain with high production. Tampa Bay could use a rotational piece, and Roberts will take the place of it.
