Can we really have a most disappointing list when the Bucs get their first win that isn’t against the Cleveland Browns since early September?
Why, yes. Yes we can. And you know why, because the foundation of a good team is knowing there’s always areas to improve.
Lets’ start up front.
RB Caleb Benenoch
It’s no secret that it has not been a good season for the first-time starting right guard of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Benenoch, the former fifth-round pick, was a swing tackle over the last few years, but finally got his chance to start this season.
The results haven’t been great.
Benenoch struggled again, this time against the 49ers, main Arik Armstead. Benenoch was eventually replaced by rookie Alex Cappa, who was active today for that reason. They rotated Benenoch back in during the second half, but replacing him with a rookie is evidence enough he hasn’t been playing up to par.
C Ryan Jensen
Jensen didn’t even have that bad of a game, but consistency is still an issue, especially with run blocking. There was even a play where he got blown back so far he was almost the one tackling running back Peyton barber in the backfield.
And even beyond that, I know that Jensen is a guy who is fighting for his teammates, but penalties are costing this team, and today it did in the form of a 15-yard drive killer.
Winston And Jackson’s Deep Ball Chemistry
I just don’t think this is ever going to be a thing.
The next time Winston hits Jackson clean for a deep score, it will feel like the first time it will have happened since Jackson has arrived in Tampa Bay. Winston went for Jackson multiple times against the 49ers, and his timing and accuracy on each of the passes wasn’t even close. It’s clear that these two can’t connect, and that’s both discouraging and disappointing.
They’ll need that connection to be much better down the road — if Jackson is even still in Tampa Bay next year.
