The Bucs could have won the NFC South and clinched a playoff berth last Sunday, but suffered an embarrassing 9-0 loss to the Saints instead. The “just win and they’re in” scenario continues for one more week as a result.
With Tampa Bay’s next win, which could come on Sunday, December 26 at Carolina, the 10-4 Bucs will win the division and automatically make the playoffs with their 11th victory of the year. But there are other ways Tampa Bay can clinch a playoff berth this week – even if it loses in Carolina.
The NFL released the playoff-clinching scenarios for the Bucs and all NFL teams on Thursday.
The Bucs clinch the NFC South division crown with:
Tampa Bay win or tie OR
New Orleans loss or tie
The Bucs can clinch at least a wild card playoff berth with:
Minnesota loss or tie + Philadelphia loss or tie OR
Minnesota loss or tie + Dallas win or tie OR
Minnesota loss or tie + Dallas clinches at least a tie in strength-of-victory tiebreaker over Philadelphia
Should the Bucs win the NFC South title on Sunday, Tampa Bay would host at least one home playoff game. The Bucs currently have the No. 3 seed in the NFC behind the Packers, which has the league’s best record at 11-3, and the Cowboys, which also have a 10-4 record. The Cardinals and Rams both have 10-4 records, and occupy the No. 4 and 5 spots in the NFC playoff picture, respectively.
