Brate gets the slight nod over quarterback Jameis Winston and wide receiver Mike Evans for Tampa Bay’s MVP on offense. Winston missed three games and posted a 3-10 record as a starter, and despite improving his completion percentage from 60.8 to 63.8 percent and upping his QB rating from 86.1 to 92.2, he led the league with 15 fumbles, including seven lost fumbles, in addition to 11 interceptions. Evans barely topped 1,000 yards, had a modest yards-per-catch (14.1 avg.) and saw a decline in touchdowns from 12 a year ago to five last season.
Brate played in all 16 games and had fewer targets due to the emergence of rookie tight end O.J. Howard, but still led the team with six touchdowns on 48 catches for 591 yards (12.3 avg.). Brate had a few uncharacteristic drops against New England, otherwise he was a steadying influence for both Winston and backup Ryan Fitzpatrick. Howard, who tied Brate for the team lead with six touchdowns, even acknowledged how much help the veteran was to his development during his rookie season.
