Tampa Bay’s special teams were anything but special in 2017 with missed field goal galore, a pair of blocked punts, including one returned for a touchdown, and surrendering a pair of touchdowns on kick off returns from 100-plus yards. After veteran Nick Folk missed 5-of-11 field goals and two extra points to start the year, including three missed field goals in a 19-14 loss to New England, Tampa Bay moved on and re-signed Patrick Murray, who was the team’s kicker in 2014.
Murray nailed 19-of-23 field goals (82.6 percent) and proved to be a steadying force at a position that has been unsteady for years. Murray was a perfect 13-of-13 inside 40 yards, but was 2-of-5 from 50 yards and beyond, which exposed his limited range. Murray also struggled on kickoffs and will need to work on that and his accuracy on long field goals if he is going to be Tampa Bay’s kicker again in 2018.
