ROUND 3: Louisiana-Lafayette OL Robert Hunt
6-5, 322 – Senior
The Bucs end Day 2 with the selection of another offensive lineman in Hunt, who played right tackle as a senior for the Ragin’ Cajuns after playing guard the first three years of his college career. Last year, Licht flooded the cornerback position with the selection of Sean Murphy-Bunting and Jamel Dean in the second and third round a year after drafting two cornerbacks in the second round in M.J. Stewart and Carlton Davis in 2018.
This year, Licht floods the offensive line with the selection of Jones and Hunt, who will also be at the Senior Bowl this year. Hunt has the size to compete at right tackle, but may be better suited to play right guard at the next level.
Louisiana-Lafayette had one of the best running games in the country last year, rushing 574 times for 3,604 yards, which ranked sixth in the nation, and had 42 rushing touchdowns, which was tied for third. Tampa Bay’s run blocking needs to improve, and the selection of Hunt could go a long way to help in that endeavor.
Cappa, a former left tackle at Humboldt State, was selected in the third round of the 2018 draft, and won the starting job at right tackle. While he was better than Kevin Pamphile or Caleb Benenoch, Cappa was the lowest graded offensive lineman in Tampa Bay by Pro Football Focus (62.7), so there is significant room for improvement at right guard – whether it’s from Cappa or some competition with Hunt.
Hunt, a team captain, will get the chance to go against top-flight competition and up his stock at the Senior Bowl. If he performs well and the Bucs like him, they may have to consider trading up for him in the second round like they did with guard Ali Marpet, who starred at the Senior Bowl in 2015. Watch Hunt (50) play right tackle for Louisiana-Lafayette against Appalachian State in 2019.
