PewterReport.com analyzes the top players in the 2020 NFL Draft with its position previews. Taylor Jenkins previews the defensive tackle position with a comprehensive look at what the Bucs have and what they need along the interior defensive line, a detailed list of this year’s top interior defensive linemen, and Scott Reynolds offers up the annual PewterReport.com Bucs’ Best Bets – one early round pick, and a pick from the later rounds.

What The Bucs Have On The Interior Defensive Line

In a vastly important move, Tampa Bay was able to re-sign defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh to a one-year deal that sealed the Bucs’ attempts at keeping their starting front seven together. In 2019, the unit lead the league in run defense with just 73.8 rushing yards allowed per game.

Unfortunately for Tampa Bay, the re-signing is a short-term move that will ultimately leave the interior defensive line as a position of need in the future, but it brings back a talented and experienced veteran and keeps the position from being a pressing need to address early in the 2020 draft. Tampa Bay also re-signed Rakeem Nunez-Roches, a solid rotational backup, marking the return of their three top defensive tackles from last season, while letting veteran reserve nose tackle Beau Allen go.

Veteran Will Gholston provides positional flexibility, but he’s the team’s starter at defensive end in Todd Bowles’ 3-4 scheme. The Bucs will also have Pat O’Connor and Jeremiah Ledbetter to compete for a spot in training camp.

What The Bucs Need On The Interior Defensive Line

The Bucs need depth. With the loss of run-stopper Allen to free agency, Tampa Bay will need to add at least one more piece to their interior defensive line either through the draft or free agency, while possibly selecting one more late-round flier that will come with practice squad eligibility to provide added depth in the case of injury at the position.

Fortunately it’s a deep draft at the position and provides a number of potential role players to step up and learn from a strong and experienced group of defensive linemen in Tampa.
