Fitzpatrick is a top defensive back talent, there’s no doubt about that. But exactly what is he in the NFL? Top picks at defensive back are usually reserved for outside cornerbacks – lockdown type players. Fitzpatrick might have the athletic ability to be that, but he rarely played there during his college career. Instead, Fitzpatrick saw more time at safety and nickel cornerback. He played both very well, but how high do you take a player like that?
I think Washington will give Fitzpatrick a chance to start as a real cornerback on the outside. If he can’t work as well there, they still need safety help, too. Fitzpatrick could be a multi-position option for them and fill different needs.
