Neither the Bucs offensive line nor the defensive line won the day in the 1-on-1 pass protection – pass rush period at the AdventHealth Training Center on Monday morning. Instead, it was a draw with several offensive linemen and pass rushers standing out individually.
Here is how the 1-on-1 battles ended by Pewter Report’s estimation:
Outside linebacker Shaquil Barrett started things off for the defense by winning a rep against right tackle Tristan Wirfs, which is quite an accomplishment. Wirfs battled back on the next rep and stonewalled edge rusher Anthony Nelson.
Right guard Alex Cappa had two masterful reps against defensive tackles Ndamukong Suh and Rakeem Nunez-Roches back-to-back. Cappa was square in his stance and strong with his punch. He’s come such a long way as a pass-protecting guard with his base and his footwork.
With Ryan Jensen snapping to the quarterbacks during the 7-on-7s, Donell Stanley took the starter reps at center. He got bull-rushed by Vita Vea, losing that rep before a stalemate with Nunez-Roches.

Right guard Ali Marpet got defensive lineman Will Gholston off balance and threw him to the ground on the first rep. During the second rep, Jason Pierre-Paul, who was rushing as an interior defensive lineman, used his speed to knife past Marpet and win the rep.
Left tackle Donovan Smith held outside linebacker Cam Gill at bay on the first rep before getting tossed aside by Pierre-Paul on the second. Pierre-Paul was lined up as an outside linebacker and was really animated after winning that rep, getting the rest of the D-line fired up.
Ladarius Hamilton rushed from the left side and beat right tackle Brad Seaton twice. Then Patrick O’Connor and Jeremiah Ledbetter each won a rep against reserve right guard Aaron Stinnie. O’Connor beat Stinnie with an inside move, while Ledbetter got quick, initial penetration.
The defense kept up the momentum as Kobe Smith and Pierre-Paul, again as an interior rusher, beat guard John Molchon on back-to-back snaps. Then it was Khalil Davis’ turn to win back-to-back reps against rookie guard Sadarius Hutcherson. Davis executed a perfect spin move on the first rep and Hutcherson was slow to react.
Reserve left tackle Nick Leverett ended the losing streak for the offense by winning two reps against Elijah Ponder in dominant fashion.
Seaton got two more reps at right tackle and split them. He lost to Quinton Bell on an inside spin move on the first one, but rebounded and locked up O’Connor’s bull rush attempt.

Hutcherson continued to struggle in pass pro, losing to defensive tackle Benning Potoa’e, who got skinny and knifed between Hutcherson and Seaton on the first rep. On the second rep, Hutcherson had enough and didn’t wait. He threw an two-handed punch to Potoa’e’s chest that immediately sent him flying. The two battled for a third rep, which was a draw.
Stinnie and Davis had a draw on the next rep, and then Stinnie shutdown Pierre-Paul right from the snap on the next.
Rookie Joe Tryon only had one rep, which came on the last play, as he beat left tackle Chidi Okefe with an inside spin.
