It sounds like the saga between absent outside linebacker Randy Gregory and the Buccaneers is about to come to an end. During tonight’s preseason game between the Bucs and Jaguars where Tampa Bay is on the road in Jacksonville, NewsChannel 8 Bucs broadcaster Chris Myers had said that the team is expected to release Gregory.

Randy Gregory Never Wore A Bucs Uniform

When Tampa Bay signed Randy Gregory on April 4 he was expected to be in the mix at outside linebacker with the likes of Yaya Diaby, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, Anthony Nelson, rookie second-round pick Chris Braswell and others. However, Gregory did not attend OTAs, he did not report to mini-camp and also did not report for training camp as well.

We have never seen Gregory in a Bucs helmet or uniform. The closest he came to donning team attire was when Gregory wore a creamsicle hat during his introductory zoom press conference. The Bucs waited to make a move for Gregory as they could continue to fine him for missing all of training camp. That way, Tampa Bay was able to recoup all money that would’ve been given to him in a signing bonus.

Gregory’s failure to report to Tampa was a head scratching move. He’s in the middle of a lawsuit with the NFL over his previous suspensions, but that was all before he signed with the team and would have no impact on his current team.

The Current OLB Room

Oddly enough, Tampa Bay is a bit thin at outside linebacker at the moment. Yaya Diaby is out for the rest of the preseason as he is suffering from a high ankle sprain. Luckily, he’s on track to return for the regular season opener. Joe Tryon-Shoyinka has also been out for over a week, although he warms up with his teammates but doesn’t participate in any physical drills.

This has given tons of reps to the rookie Chris Braswell, along with young second-year players Markees Watts and Jose Ramirez. Rookie undrafted free agent Jay Person has also impressed the front office and has a chance to crack the practice squad.

It’s unknown if the team will decide to add another edge rusher, but if an injury occurs to another player at the position, Tampa Bay might be forced to bring in someone new before the start of the regular season.
