After injuring the patellar tendon in his knee during Thursday morning’s practice, Bucs’ running back T.J. Logan is set to have surgery on Saturday, per The Athletic’s Greg Auman.

According to Bruce Arians, Logan was off to a hot start at training camp, showing the skills of an all-around offensive weapon rather than just a return specialist.

“T.J. Logan has looked really, really good running the ball and catching the ball,” Arians said on Monday. “People don’t really realize him as a running back, but he’s a hell of a running back and he’s not just a return man.”

Pewter Report’s Mark Cook and Taylor Jenkins were on site when Logan was injured, and they detailed the incident in today’s practice report:

On the very next play following the scuffle, running back T.J. Logan took a hand off and headed to his right. As he got to the second level, outside linebacker Quinton Bell reached out and drug Logan to the ground by his jersey.

Logan come down awkwardly and screamed in pain while writhing on the turf. Wide receiver Mike Evans began yelling at the defense, “That better be a [expletive] cramp!”

It appeared to be more than a cramp as the trainers came out and immediately brought a cart out to get Logan back in the facility. Logan was helped up by two trainers and wasn’t able to put any weight on his right leg from our vantage point.

After practice, Arians remained frustrated by the reckless play from Bell that caused the injury.

“When we’re in a non-tackling period, I don’t want any tackling,” Arians said. “When we’re tackling, we tackle. The last thing you do is grab a jersey. I can see on film whether you would have made the tackle or not, so we’ll see how it plays out. There’s a certain practice etiquette you have to follow and the young guys struggle with that.

“[That was] real hard. You never want to see a player down, especially a guy who was having as good of a camp as he [Logan] was having. We’ll wait and see what happens with it – still too early to tell. We’ll wait and see.”
