The Senior Bowl held it’s weigh in and first practices of the week on Tuesday in shoulder pads and shorts during a cold, dreary afternoon in Mobile, Ala. These were the Senior Bowl offensive players that stood out to the PewterReport.com staff on Tuesday.

NORTH TEAM

Ohio State WR Terry McLaurin

McLaurin was one of the most underrated prospects coming into the Senior Bowl with just 75 career receptions for 1,251 yards (16.7 avg.) and 19 touchdowns during his Buckeyes career. He’s coming off a senior season in which he caught 35 passes for 701 yards (20 avg.) and 11 touchdowns from junior quarterback Dwayne Haskins, who is slated to be a first-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. McLaurin is viewed as one of the better deep threats in this year’s draft and had his way against Texas cornerback Kris Boyd and others on the first day of Senior Bowl practice.

McLaurin was also timed as the fastest player from Day 1 by Zebra Technology in Mobile, and that certainly caught the attention of Bucs general manager Jason Licht and Tampa Bay’s scouts, as they know new head coach Bruce Arians likes speedy receivers who can be vertical threats.

OG Chris Lindstrom – Boston College

With big-name guards like Michael Deiter and Beau Benzschawel from Wisconsin generating early buzz before the Senior Bowl began, it was Lindstrom who was the best of the bunch on Tuesday. He displayed power in his blocks, and can control the line of scrimmage for the entire play if he gets his hands into position fast enough. Lindstrom does a great job of building power from the lower body to gain an advantage. The Bucs could use a guard with the skill that Lindstrom has.

The biggest concern on the offensive side of the ball for the Bucs is what they will do at right guard. Incumbent Caleb Benenoch struggled mightily during the season, and rookie backup Alex Cappa didn’t do enough to warrant much playing time in the eyes of the former coaches. Now having a new staff could change that, but it wouldn’t hurt to bolster the offensive line with a guard like Lindstrom.

SOUTH TEAM

RB Ryquell Armstead – Temple

Armstead showed his ability to both use his vision to cut on a dime to move up field, and also how to kick it into another gear for that breakaway run. The Bucs thought they had that with Ronald Jones II, the team’s second-round pick last year, but what makes Armsted different is that he can play physically as well, while being equally as threatening of a player as a receiver out of the backfield. Armstead doesn’t have Jones’ speed, but he can do a better job picking up yardage after contact.

During practice it was Armstead that was the one looking to make a hit on someone. He lowered his shoulder and initiated contact on opposing defenders. The Bucs have that in bruising runner Peyton Barber, but they’ve lacked a running back that you have to worry about in the passing game for important plays such, as running the wheel route. That’s where Armsted comes in. Arians also got his first head coaching job at Temple and still has some ties there, so it doesn’t hurt that Armsted can call that school his alma matter.

QB Gardner Minshew – Washington State

As it’s been stated before by both Arians and offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich, Jameis Winston is the starting quarterback for this Bucs football team. With that said, there’s still a role to be filled for the backup position if Ryan Fitzpatrick and Ryan Griffin don’t stick around under the coaching regime. Both are slated to be free agents in 2019.

Minshew was dropping dimes to his receivers on both deep and mid-range passes. He put the ball exactly where it needed to be, showing off good precision with receivers that he hasn’t worked with before. He plays with a commanding confidence and isn’t afraid to air it out. That sounds like a Arians-type quarterback that might be worth taking a shot at in the later rounds.
