FAB 5. SR’s Buc Shots

DON’T WORRY, IT’S JUST WEEK 1: Just in case you aren’t on Twitter or have been living under a rock this week following Tampa Bay’s 34-23 loss at New Orleans last week, did you know that every year that Tom Brady has lost a season opener he’s wound up in the Super Bowl? It’s true. The first two times it happened New England won the Super Bowl in 2003 and 2014. The last time it happened the Patriots lost the Super Bowl in 2017.

While a Super Bowl appearance in 2020 would be nice, especially since Super Bowl LV will be held in Tampa next February, the Bucs haven’t been to the postseason in a dozen years, so fans of the Pewter Pirates would probably just be excited if this season ended with a long-awaited playoff appearance.

BRADY BRINGS IN THE RATINGS: As if landing a franchise-high five prime time games this year thanks to Tom Brady’s arrival in Tampa Bay wasn’t enough proof of his star power, fans tuned in by the millions across the country to watch Brady’s debut with the Buccaneers as they traveled to New Orleans for a Week 1 NFC South showdown. The Bucs at Saints game, which featured Brady vs. another future Hall of Famer in Drew Brees, drew 25.8 million viewers for the 4:25 p.m. ET start, which was more than the Kansas City vs. Houston match-up in prime time on Thursday night, or the Dallas vs. Los Angeles game on Sunday Night Football.

NEW PEWTER NATION PODCAST AS BUCS LOOK TO BOUNCE BACK: The Buccaneers are trying to get back on track this week as they take on the NFC South rival Carolina Panthers at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay’s home opener. Both teams are 0-1 to start the season. Pewter Reporters Mark Cook, Taylor “The Grizz” Jenkins and I broke down the Bucs vs. Panthers game in the latest Pewter Nation Podcast, which was recorded on Thursday afternoon. If you want to get prepped for the Bucs vs. Panthers clash on Sunday, this is the podcast you need to listen to.

Pewter Nation Podcast Episode 210: Preppin’ For The Panthers

Pewter Reporters Jon Ledyard, Matt Matera and myself offered up the post-game analysis from Tampa Bay’s 34-23 loss at New Orleans in Week 1. Bucs quarterback Tom Brady threw two costly interceptions, including a pick-six, as Tampa Bay continued to beat itself with turnovers and penalty despite the arrival of “The GOAT.” Get the PR staff’s post-game reaction right here.

BALDY BREAKS DOWN BRADY: Fox NFL analyst Brian Baldinger does a great job of analyzing the action each week in his Baldy’s Breakdowns segments. Check out this one from earlier in the week about Tom Brady getting used to Bruce Arians’ offense.

BRADY NOT IN THE BEST PICK-SIX COMPANY: Bucs quarterback Tom Brady’s pick-six at New Orleans was the third straight game in which he has thrown a pick-six dating back to his final two games with the Patriots. That ties him with Falcons backup quarterback Matt Schaub and current teammate Blaine Gabbert, who threw pick-sixes in three straight games for San Francisco in 2013.

Brady threw a pick-six in a 27-24 loss at home to Miami in the 2019 regular season finale, and then ended his New England career with a pick-six on his final pass as a Patriot in a 20-13 home loss to Tennessee in the first round of the AFC playoffs. All three of those games were losses for Brady, who lost his debut in a Tampa Bay uniform, 34-23, last Sunday.
