FAB 5. SR’s Buc Shots

• In 1984, former Bucs head coach John McKay tried in vain to have running back James Wilder break the all-purpose yardage record set by Los Angeles Rams rusher Eric Dickerson that season. As stated in Fab 2, Wilder finished just 16 yards shy of breaking Dickerson’s mark, but would have easily eclipsed it had the Bucs defense been more stout when playing against the Rams a month earlier.

The Bucs lost a heartbreaker at home to the Rams, 34-33, and allowed Dickerson to run wild. Dickerson had 28 carries for 191 yards and three touchdowns, and added one catch for three yards. Los Angeles totaled 299 yards on the ground and didn’t have the need to throw the ball, as Jeff Kemp completed just 7-of-10 passes for 68 yards.

Wilder rushed for 77 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries against L.A., and added 10 catches for 80 yards to bring his all-purpose total to 157 yards, but that was 37 yards less than Dickerson’s total. Tampa Bay’s defense wasn’t up to par in 1984 in part because Hugh Green’s season was cut short due to a car wreck on Dale Mabry Highway and defensive end Lee Roy Selmon was in the twilight of his career, yet managed a respectable eight sacks at the age of 30.

• With 664 career tackles, Tampa Bay linebacker Lavonte David surpassed Jeff Davis (662 tackles) for the eighth spot on Tampa Bay’s all-time tackles list last year. With 79 more tackles he’ll overtake Pro Football Hall of Famer and Bucs Ring of Honor inductee Lee Roy Selmon (743 tackles) for seventh place.

However, David won’t be able to catch Richard “Batman” Wood (855 tackles) until 2018 at the earliest. And David has a ways to go until he can surpass Bucs Ring of Honor member John Lynch (973 tackles) for fifth place.

• By now you’ve probably seen former Bucs linebacker Scot Brantley’s bone-jarring hit of former Lions quarterback Eric Hipple. It’s one of the all-time hardest hits in NFL history. If you haven’t seen it before (or just want to see it again), here it is.

But did you know that Brantley’s hard hit wasn’t the first time Hipple got jacked by a Buccaneer player while going out of bounds? Brantley’s hit didn’t occur until 1985. But Tampa Bay defensive back Johnny Ray Smith nailed Hipple back in 1983 after being chased by defensive linemen Lee Roy Selmon and David Logan.
