Bucs defensive back and second-round pick from 2018, safety M.J. Stewart, made an appearance on NFL Network’s Good Morning Football show on Monday. During his time on the morning talk show, Stewart gave his insight about an array of topics ranging from his transition to safety to how Tampa Bay can emerge from the talented NFC South to Jameis Winston’s leadership.
“I like to be valuable wherever I’m at,” Stewart said about moving from cornerback to safety. “Whether that be corner, nickle or safety. Wherever the team needs me.”
He added that he prefers the nickle position, his “primary” position as he calls it, where he can cover the slot, match up man-to-man with receivers and be physical off of the edge in run support and as a blitzer.

Stewart went on to talk about how the Bucs’ can emerge from the NFC South despite talented teams like the Saints, Falcons and Panthers who largely dominate the national media coverage.
“We’re in a loaded division – the NFC South,” Stewart said. “We have the Falcons, the Panthers and the Saints, who are all really good. And we’re a sleeper team, which we like, because we don’t get that media hype – but we’ll show it on the field where it matters.”
When asked about Winston’s leadership he spoke about how he’s seen his starting quarterback’s work ethic grow since he’s been there, sharing a story where he and Winston were both on the field last week getting their work in despite the pouring rain. Stewart also pointed to Winston’s ability to not only encourage young players like himself when it’s needed, but also talk a little bit of trash during practice to create that valuable sense of competition at all times.
