DT Gerald McCoy
McCoy had basically been unblockable through four days of practice. At first, I thought maybe it was because of no pads, but on Sunday, with the pads on, he was even better. Defensive line coach Brentson Buckner may end up being the best offseason move this team made. He’s getting even more out of McCoy, who isn’t a guy that really needs to be pushed, yet we see Buckner challenging him on a daily basis.
WR Mike Evans
It is sometimes easy to forget how young Mike Evans really is. And who could blame anyone? Four straight seasons with over 1,000 yards, a Top 5 receiver in the NFL and one that will be coveted in every fantasy football draft over the next few weeks. Evans, on paper, looks to be a veteran Vincent Jackson type of player, but then you interview him. Fornite. Chipotle. Playing video games till 5 a.m. in the offseason. And when you talk to him you realize he is really a 24-year old teenage essentially. Until he slips his helmet on. The happy-go-lucky, smiling, cracking jokes Mike disappears and the highly focused superb athlete emerges. This training camp we have seen it even more.
And if you are a fantasy football player, draft this guy early. He is poised to have a great season if the first few days of training camp is any type of indicator.
DE Jason Pierre-Paul
So JPP skipped OTAs. Who does he think he is? Too good? Doesn’t need the work? Well, apparently he didn’t need the work. So far through four practices Pierre-Paul is as advertised. Maybe even better. Fast, strong and versatile, Mike Smith is going to have some fun creating mismatches this year with his line combinations. And a big reason for that is because of Pierre-Paul and what he brings to the table.
QB Ryan Fitzpatrick
Fitzpatrick reminds me of an old west gunfighter who walks into a saloon and orders a glass of milk. The other rough and tumble cowboys all snicker a little and finally someone challenges him. With little talking Fitz shoots out the candle in the corner and 10 bottles of whiskey behind the bar before anyone even knows what happened. Before you realize it, he is gone and all you see is the dust from his horse as he moves on. Fitzpatrick has ridden in and out of a few NFL towns in his career, and his gunslinging days are quickly diminishing. But that doesn’t mean he can’t still rally when challenged. He is rallying for his 52 other teammates and none we have spoken to are betting against the scrappy veteran.
LB Kwon Alexander
The time bomb in Kwon Alexander’s head had been ticking since the Bucs walked off the field last New Year’s after beating the Saints at Ray Jay. Tick, tick, tick. Sunday, after seven months of waiting the timer ended and the bomb went off. Unfortunately for the offensive player who took the first big shot from Alexander. This past offseason Alexander took ownership of the Bucs defense and he hasn’t disappointed early in camp. A tone setter and relentless worker, Alexander is out to prove making the Pro Bowl in 2017 wasn’t a fluke.
