Ke’Shawn Vaughn wasn’t the most known running back when the Bucs selected him 76th overall in the third round. The two schools Vaughn played for – Illinois and Vanderbilt – aren’t usually in the limelight like an LSU or Georgia is.
Vaughn quietly had an impressive college football career that went under the radar, which included back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons. But the thing the Bucs may love the most about him is his competitive edge.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler spoke with Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason about his now former player Vaughn and compared his mentality to Richard Sherman.
“They’re getting a guy with a Richard Sherman-type edge to him,” Mason said.
Just now on ESPN @JFowlerESPN said he spoke to Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason last night and asked him what the #Bucs are getting in running back Ke'Shawn Vaughn.
Mason said: "They're getting a guy with a Richard Sherman-type edge to him."

Sherman was considered the best corner in during his prime with the Seattle Seahawks, and is still one of the better corners in the league with the 49ers. He was a fifth-round pick who made a name for himself from playing with a chip on his shoulder, along with a confidence and attitude that is difficult to match.
In his post draft press conference after day two of the draft, Jason Licht said that Vaughn’s mentality was one of the things they loved about him.
“He’s also a very intense person just like Antoine [Winfield] in terms of his demeanor,” Licht said. “In terms of his football character and passion. One of the things that we’ve really really loved about him, he’s very smart.”
The Bucs passed on more high profile running backs such as Cam Akers or J.K. Dobbins in the second. However, they were still very high on Vaughn and felt it was important to draft a running back before the third round is done.
“We felt like it was very important,” Licht said. “By no stretch of the imagination am I gonna say that we reached at all because he was sitting right there right when we were picking and it just matched up with what we felt like we needed, which was another running back to get in the mix with RoJo. So RoJo and Dare and T.J., we feel like we have a pretty good group right now.”
