WFLA News Channel 8 sports anchor Dan Lucas sits down with Bucs head coach Todd Bowles after each Tampa Bay game to assess the outcome in a segment called Bucs With Bowles. This exclusive content can be found on the WFLA YouTube channel and on PewterReport.com.

Following the Bucs’ 20-6 loss to the Lions that has caused Tampa Bay to fall to 3-2 on the season, Lucas and Bowles hit on several topics in the five-minute interview. Highlights include:

Todd Bowles on the defense giving up too many third downs:

“We gave up two third-and-longs that caused us touchdowns by our own admittance. They played hard. We stayed in it for a long time but we didn’t get the turnovers. They got one that set up three points and we got two busted coverages that cost us touchdowns.”

“That’s an incomplete pass we can sit there and say how it was incompleted, but you know whether it was tipped, whether it was overthrown, whether it was underthrown – it’s a foul ball. You know we got we had many more opportunities than that that we’ve got to capitalize on. But we overthrew some and we overthrew some in practice all week and we were rusty there all the way around from an offensive standpoint. We’ve got to get better.”

Todd Bowles on the lack of offensive success against the Lions:

“When they shut down our run game they kind of shut down our play-action game, so we got to go back to the drawing board and find different ways – and easier ways – to complete some plays on first down to get us going a little bit.”

Todd Bowles on punting the ball back to the Lions in the fourth quarter instead of going for it on fourth-and-2:

“The third-and-longs hurt us, and in the second half I think about 10 and a half minutes we thought we’d get the ball back because they’ve been playing fairly well on defense, or we have been playing fairly well on defense, and they got a long drive and that it kind of deflated the air out of our tires.”

Todd Bowles on Ryan Neal giving up a 45-yard TD to Jameson Williams:

“That’s a tough play for him but you know every time there’s a receiver that gets behind you as soon as he turns his shoulders that means the ball’s short you got to get your head and eyes around and find the ball as well he did a better job of finding the ball than we did.”

Todd Bowles on the play of rookie DT Calijah Kancey:

“It went the other way – they double teamed Vita [Vea] and they left Calijah open so Calijah made the plays. But now that you’re getting him on film, he’s going to start commanding some double teams from a pass rush standpoint to free up Vita. But right now you know Vita still commanded the double team but Calijah had three quarterback hits, he had a sack, he had some TFLs – he filled up the stat sheet pretty good. He’s going to be a very good pressure player for us.”
