The Bucs need a bounce-back year at corner — but who’s more likely to deliver it between Zyon McCollum and Benjamin Morrison? There’s a case to be made for each player.
Pewter Report’s Scott Reynolds and Matt Matera had a long form conversation on the Pewter Report Podcast about the entire Bucs’ secondary, but a specific discussion popped up about if McCollum or Morrison is more likely to have a better season.
Zyon McCollum had a down year after signing a contract extension. His poor play was a combination of dropping interceptions, getting beat in coverage and a series of injuries that cost him four games. The upside for McCollum is that he’s been able to rebound before, and that was best exemplified from his struggles in year one but how well he did in year two. Also, McCollum is going into this season with a new cornerbacks coach Rashad Johnson, who can hopefully get more out of him.

Benjamin Morrison is a bit of a different story. The potential is very much there after the Bucs took him in the second round. It feels like his season never got off the ground as he missed a ton of time in OTAs and training camp where he didn’t play in a preseason game. Hamstring injuries cost him in the regular season, too, as he missed seven games. The constant stopping and starting over and over again never allowed for Morrison to consistently get in a playing routine or rhythm. But he did play more at the end of the season and showed flashes of what he can be as a starting corner.
Everything considered, it feels like McCollum can be banked on to regain his old form quicker, while the ceiling for Morrison is higher overall.
