Bucs legendary radio broadcaster Gene Deckerhoff announced via twitter today that he is returning to the broadcast booth to call Bucs games in 2023.

This will be Deckerhoff’s 35th season as the Bucs radio play-by-play announcer. It was expected that 2022 would be Deckerhoff’s last behind the mic, as he had announced his retirement from calling Florida State’s football games in March of 2022. At the time Deckerhoff said, “I will finish my commitment to the Buccaneer Radio Network and who knows maybe broadcast another Super Bowl.”

The Super Bowl Deckerhoff was most likely imagining was one former Bucs quarterback Tom Brady led the team to in what was most likely his final season in 2022. While the Bucs made the playoffs, they made an early round exit with a disappointing loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Nevertheless, unlike Brady, Deckerhoff will make another go of it in 2023 alongside color analyst Dave Moore as the Bucs move away from the future Hall of Famer Brady to a new quarterback. Perhaps Deckerhoff’s commitment to the Bucs went beyond the 2022 season. Or perhaps he felt he still had more left in the tank.

Deckerhoff Has A Legendary History With Bucs & FSU

Between his time calling Florida State basketball and football games and his decades with Tampa Bay he is possibly the most prestigious broadcaster in the history of the State. His “Touchdown Tampa Bay!” call is one of the most iconic in the history of the sport. Prior to joining Tampa Bay in 1989 Deckerhoff called men’s basketball games for his alma-mater, the University of Florida.

Eventually, he moved on to FSU. Deckerhoff has long said that while he is a graduate of the University of Florida, he is not a Gator. Rather he is a Seminole. Deckerhoff was inducted into the Florida Sports Broadcaster Hall of Fame in 2000.

Whenever Deckerhoff decides to finally hang up his microphone cord, we at Pewter Report will be banging the drum to include him in the Bucs Ring of Honor to complete his deserving accolades.
