Latest Bucs Headlines

The Bucs started slow out of the gate and couldn’t make the big plays late to win the game. The bye week was supposed to change things, but that wasn’t the case for the Bucs, who lost in a 29-19 upset to Washington on the road.

Here are the most disappointing players from the game.

WR Jaelon Darden

This was a good opportunity for Darden to get more playing time with Antonio Brown out and Chris Godwin limited with injury. But it wasn’t really the coming out party that was expected. While he made a nice 29-yard reception, Darden hurt the Bucs early in the game. The rookie caught a pass from Tom Brady and then lost the ball after getting hit, which was then caught by Washington’s defense. It was technically an interception for Brady, but it was Darden’s mistake that led to the turnover. He also wiped out untouched a few times in the return game.

LG Ali Marpet

Marpet is normally “old reliable” but that surprisingly wasn’t the case in this game. A lot of the time Marpet was responsible for blocking Jonathan Allen, who beat him a few times. Later on, Marpet had a holding penalty that stalled the Bucs’ drive. Not the best game for a player who has looked like a Pro Bowler this season.

Bucs De Will Gholston

DT Will Gholston

It was very uncharacteristic of Gholston to jump offsides on a third-and-2 right before the two-minute warning at the second quarter. A veteran player like that shouldn’t give the opponent a free first down, but that’s what occurred. It really just was one of those games where unpredictable things went wrong for the Bucs. Gholston is a player that is relied upon in the defense and can’t be making those mistakes.

TE O.J. Howard

The game hadn’t even really started, yet Howard was committing penalties. He had a false start before the first offensive play to set the Bucs back five yards. That was his lone contribution to the game. Meanwhile, Cam Brate scored a touchdown in Rob Gronkowski’s absence.

K Ryan Succop

Succop missed an extra point late in the game that would’ve made it a three-point game. It didn’t matter since Washington scored a touchdown on the ensuing drive, but there’s no reason for Succop to miss that kick. He’s now missed either a field goal attempt or extra point in five of nine games this season.

Bucs Olb Jason Pierre-Paul

OLB Jason Pierre-Paul

The best outside linebacker on the field today for the Bucs was Anthony Nelson. Let that sink in. Anthony Nelson was the best player at that position. JPP has been in the news a lot lately after tweeting out that he’s playing with a torn rotator cuff. He didn’t really help his case after recording just one tackle in the game. He also missed a tackle on a scrambling Taylor Heinicke on a play where he was just a step behind. Joe Tryon-Shoyinka needs to get more snaps.

OLB Shaq Barrett

You can pretty much put Barrett and JPP on the list together, because Barrett was invisible on Sunday. He made no tackles in the game and had one quarterback hit. He’s been the best pass rusher for the Bucs this season, but couldn’t do much in this one. Barrett and JPP didn’t make plays, Tryon-Shoyinka and Nelson were doing so. They’re going to need Barrett moving forward when the playoffs come around and big moments present themselves.
