Latest Bucs Headlines

Each week after every Bucs game, we’ll take a closer look at the snap count distribution for Tampa Bay on offense and defense. We’ll assess what we can learn from who played the most and least from the game.

Here’s a closer look at which players received the highest and lowest number of snaps in the Bucs’ 27-20 road loss to the Colts in a game that featured many self-inflicted mistakes by the Bucs that cost the team a chance to improve its record.

Bucs Offense

Bucs Offensive Snap Count

Mike Evans played 92% of the snaps, which was the highest amount he’s played all season and the first time he hit the 90th percentile as well. It worked out as Evans recorded 70 receiving yards and scored the Bucs’ only two touchdowns int he game. On the other side of it, Chris Godwin has played a lower amount as of late, coming in at 83%. Ever since Godwin played a season-high 88% in Week 9, his numbers have dipped to 77, 80 and 83% over the next three.

In other limited uses, Deven Thompkins had no impact on the game as a receiver, playing just 7%. Was this punishment for not making a play in the end zone at San Francisco? Will Trey Palmer suffer the same fate next week for having a costly drop on second-and-17 on Sunday see him get less time when the Bucs play the Panthers? With Rakim Jarrett on injured reserve, veteran David Moore got his first playing time of the season and logged 18% of the snaps. That was more than Thompkins, Ko Kieft and Chase Edmonds.

The Bucs clearly had no worries about running back Rachaad White being questionable for the game because his 87% of the snaps was the second-highest amount he’s played this season.

The tight ends, outside of Cade Otton, didn’t have much playing time again, but shout-out to Payne Durham for making an incredible catch down the sideline that led to Mike Evans’ first touchdown soon after. Plays like that could get him more playing time moving ahead. Durham’s two catches for 13 yards are career highs for him in his rookies season.

Hope you had your watches out because for the second time in three weeks it was Trask Time. Kyle Trask replaced an injured Baker Mayfield on the first drive of the game for two plays. He came close to hitting Chris Godwin for a touchdown,  but the Bucs had to kick a field goal.

Bucs Defense

Bucs Defensive Snap Count

Todd Bowles designed a different looking on defense up front at the beginning with inside linebacker Lavonte David missing. They came out with a look that had Joe Tryon-Shoyinka line up on the edge on the left side, next to him was YaYa Diaby inside next to Vita Vea, Calijah Kancey and then Shaq Barrett out at right outside linebacker with Devin White as the lone inside linebacker. It was fun to see something different.

Diaby actually ended up playing the most out of any outside linebacker and defensive tackle at 66%. Vita Vea and Calijah Kancey weren’t far from him with each coming in at 63%. The only other player up front to play to at least in the 60% range with Shaq Barrett. With his numbers cut in half, maybe a fire was lit under Joe Tryon-Shoyinka as he finally recorded a sack in the game. JTS played 38% of the snaps.

Logan Hall had the second-lowest amount of playing time on the season. Only the Buffalo game was a lower and he was a game time decision for it. Hall logged just 4% more that Greg Gaines, who is considered a rotational piece.

Having a different formation didn’t stop the Bucs from using rookie inside linebacker SirVocea Dennis. In the most playing time of his career, Dennis played 90% of the snaps, only trailing Devin White and Carlton Davis III, who played 100% of the game. Zyon McCollum and Antoine Winfield Jr. each played 99%. It was the lowest amount of Bucs players to play every snap on the season, though McCollum and Winfield were close.

Bowles said he would deploy a package at linebacker to replace David, but K.J. Britt was in for just 3% of the snaps. Safety Ryan Neal has been relegated to a part time role while Dee Delaney gets the majority of snaps at 74%. Christian Izien saw a high number as well at 77%. Izien has struggled along with the rest of the secondary as of late. The Bucs have allowed 27 points in two straight games.

Part of the Bucs’ struggles yesterday were because there wasn’t a consistent pass rush by the group and they’ve also gotten lackluster play in the secondary. At least Davis got an interception. Davis’ last two interceptions have come when Tampa Bay has worn the pewter jersey.

I don’t know what Todd Bowles against Markees Watts … or good pass rushers for that matter. Watts burst onto the scene two weeks ago with 11 snaps and quarterback hit that directly correlated to an interception. Last week, three snaps and no impact. Yesterday he did not have a single play on defense. Tampa Bay had two sacks in the game, with one coming from JTS where was unblocked.

The Bucs had three quarterback hits on the day, so with two of them coming from the sacks, that means only one other time did they hit Gardner Minshew. One would think they could’ve used Watts or at least tried him out when other things weren’t working? Yet not many decisions Bowles has made this season have made sense.
