Each week I’ll take a closer look at the snap count distribution for the Bucs offense and defense, assessing what we can learn from who played the most and who played the least on game day.

Here’s a look at which Bucs played the most – and the least – in the team’s 33-27 victory over the Buffalo Bills in Week 14.

Bucs Offensive Snap Counts

Week 14 Bucs Offensive Snap Counts

The major change on offense was Tyler Johnson’s return to the undisputed WR3 role. The second-year receiver played 49 snaps to Breshad Perriman’s 26. Last week, Perriman was on the field for 59 plays, while Johnson played just nine! It’s difficult to understand what the process is behind switching the two players back-and-forth, as neither was impressive last week.

Perriman had zero catches in regulation, before ending the game with a 58-yard catch-and-run touchdown. Johnson caught three underneath passes for 17 yards. Jaelon Darden played just three snaps and was not targeted. Making Scotty Miller inactive seemed like a move that would draw criticism, until Perriman’s walk-off score.

At wide receiver, Mike Evans is barely coming off the field this season. He’s played 93 percent of snaps or more the past three weeks, the first time in his career he’s strung three-such performances together. Chris Godwin has been his usual reliable self, missing just five snaps on Sunday.

Rob Gronkowski remains in complete control of the majority of reps at tight end. Meanwhile, O.J. Howard’s role is basically non-existent this season. He’s been clearly passed up by Cam Brate, who had 21 snaps to Howard’s five.

Ronald Jones played just eight snaps in his return from an illness that sidelined him last week. Giovani Bernard managed seven plays before bowing out with a hip injury. That makes three straight games for Leonard Fournette playing 80+ percent of the offensive snaps.

Defensive Snap Counts

Week 14 Bucs Defensive Snap Counts

I’m going to need to watch the tape of this game closely to figure out what happened in the Tampa Bay secondary. I know Sean Murphy-Bunting and Antoine Winfield Jr. went the distance, with Carlton Davis at the other outside cornerback spot. Ross Cockrell appeared to pick up most of the nickel snaps with Jamel Dean out due to illness. That left Richard Sherman as the new No. 3 safety after his first week back at practice. Andrew Adams played just 61 snaps, so it’s clear the Bucs saw something they liked with Sherman at safety.

Jason Pierre-Paul saw an increase in snaps after five straight weeks of decreasing reps. He still played just 69 percent of the reps, while Joe Tryon-Shoyinka saw the field for 41 percent. Shaq Barrett dominated the outside linebacker workload, while Anthony Nelson and Cam Gill saw limited opportunities. Nelson and Gill had seen a recent increase in reps, but that did not continue on Sunday.

What did continue was Pat O’Connor’s increase in playing time. The special teams ace got eight reps as a situational interior pass rusher, continuing to stay in the rotation. But it was Ndamukong Suh who dominated the defensive tackle snaps, with 52 plays to Vita Vea’s 38. It’s clear the Bucs see Suh as their best and healthiest interior pass rusher right now. Playing through injury, Will Gholston managed just 18 plays, six less than Rakeem Nunez Roches.
