Each week I’ll take a closer look at the snap count distribution for the Bucs offense and defense, assessing what we can learn from who played the most and who played the least on game day.
Here’s a look at which Bucs played the most – and the least – in the team’s 32-6 victory over the Panthers in Week 16.
Bucs Offensive Snap Counts
Cyril Grayson playing as many snaps as Antonio Brown was not something I expected to see on Monday. But here we are! Injuries decimated the Bucs wide receiver corps, pushing Tampa to call on their practice squad. And Grayson delivered on Sunday, in a more consistent fashion than Tyler Johnson or Scotty Miller have done all season. Three catches, 81 yards and a 14-yard carry for Grayson. Plus the outstanding hustle block to help Ke’Shawn Vaughn score the game’s opening touchdown.
Johnson served as the team’s third receiver, but wasn’t targeted in this game. Meanwhile, Miller is a complete afterthought. He played just three snaps despite the Bucs being without Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Breshad Perriman and Jaelon Darden. When others are healthy, Miller is probably going to be inactive. A pretty shocking fall from grace.
At running back, Vaughn got plenty of opportunities. In a blowout, that’s not too surprising. Ronald Jones still led the way with 35 snaps. Newcomer Le’Veon Bell got three plays late in the game, carrying twice for -1 yard. It’s clear the Bucs weren’t ready for him to be a more significant part of the game plan. Perhaps that will change in a week, when Bell has a revenge game against the Jets on the horizon.
Lots of snaps for the Bucs depth tight ends, who continue to disappoint. Cam Brate messed up a route on 3rd down, while O.J. Howard struggled to get open. Even Rob Gronkowski dropped a touchdown, his fourth drop over the past two games. The Bucs need this group to be a lot better moving forward.
Defensive Snap Counts
It may not have been Antoine Winfield Jr. out there for the Bucs, but it finally felt like there was some stability in the secondary. Tampa Bay’s defensive backfield clamped up the Panthers all game, with Sean Murphy-Bunting edging Jamel Dean in snaps. Interestingly, Richard Sherman continues to be used as a dime defensive back, not as a backup cornerback. Late in the game, it was Ross Cockrell, Rashard Robinson and Dee Delaney finishing off the victory.
Because of the score, only Mike Edwards went the distance. But in pass-obvious situations, the Bucs were definitely finding some opportunities to get Kevin Minter off the field at times. It’ll be interesting to see if that continues.
With Jason Pierre-Paul out and Shaq Barrett injured, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka played 52 snaps. That’s a career-high for the rookie edge rusher, and he wasn’t the only one. Cam Gill also set a new personal best with 28 snaps, while Anthony Nelson picked up a season-high 35 plays.
At defensive tackle, the Bucs shortened the rotation with Rakeem Nunez-Roches and Pat O’Connor out. Ndamukong Suh, Vita Vea and Will Gholston dominated the snaps, but Steve McLendon came off the bench to play a whopping 33 reps too. With Nunez-Roches likely to return next week, all those guys should be able to return to their normal workloads in Week 17.
