The arrival of cornerback Richard Sherman to the Bucs’ facilities generated quite the excitement to fans in Tampa Bay. After signing on Wednesday morning, he had his first practice with the defending Super Bowl champions as he tries to get quickly up to speed.
With only five days, three practices and an entire playbook to learn before Sunday night’s game, will Sherman play with the Bucs on the road against Patriots? Don’t count on it.
“There’d be a bunch of guys hurt if he’s out there this week,” Bruce Arians said. “We’ll wait and see. “He’s got so much to learn and he hasn’t had pads on in so long, but he does know how to play the game.”
As much as he wants to be out there, Sherman actually agreed with his new head coach.
“It’s anybody’s guess,” Sherman said on how long it’ll take him to be game-ready. “I need at least a week of practice to really hone things in and play at the level I’m capable of. I think it’d be foolish to expect me to come out and play at a super high level, and if I did it, it’s another thing to chalk up as a cool thing I did. I think the expectation is for me to train and to get in shape and give me an opportunity for the following week.”
The Bucs could use Sherman as fast as possible considering their struggles in the secondary. Luckily, Jamel Dean was able to practice on Wednesday and it looks like he’ll be able to go for Sunday night.
