Bucs quarterback Jameis Winston is in a critical contract year and is learning a new offense for the first time since arriving in Tampa Bay in 2015. PewterReport.com will chronicle each one of Winston’s practices during camp in the Winston Watch.

Saturday night’s practice was another building block for Jameis Winston as he ingratiates himself into both Bruce Arians’ offense and facing against Todd Bowles’ defense. On Friday, Arians said that Winston was “on track” for where he wants him to be, and Saturday’s practice continued that progress.

One thing Winston is getting out of these practice is familiarizing himself with the looks he’s getting from the defense. It might be only two weeks, but he has gone from trying to climb out of a hole after the rush is already on him to analyzing the defense and acting on it before they can get going.

Practice started out with the offensive line on the one-yard line with 99 more to go, and Winston battled to get the Bucs out of it. He found Mike Evans on a third down to move the chains and also hit Peyton Barber on an out route to give them breathing room.

He then had a long scramble that came from taking what the defense gave him.

The following run of 11-on-11 let Winston prove some of his detractors wrong when he nailed a deep ball throw to Mike Evans.

Once more he tried to toss one deep, but overthrew Andre Ellington.

He was accurate for the rest of the drill, commanding the offense while moving the ball down the field. You could tell he’s getting more and more comfortable as the days go by. Keep in mind that Winston did not turn the ball over at all on Saturday.

For the remainder of practice the pads were banging. Offense and defense were a full go for red zone and goal line to end the night. This gave the majority of the time to letting Ronald Jones and Peyton Barber attempt to get it over the goal line, but Winston still made some plays.

The highlight of the red zone was a beauty of play by Winston and Chris Godwin, where Godwin got separation and made a diving catch in the corner of the end zone. Winston got the ball out in a timely manner right as Godwin made his cut.

Down near the one-yard line, he managed to throw two more touchdowns. One was a jump ball to Mike Evans in a matchup of him against Vernon Hargreaves, followed by a hard acting play action pass that drew the defense in he laid it over the top to Antony Auclair.

It was a practice more set up for the battle in between the trenches at goal line, but Winston still had a strong day in his own right. Coach Arians later commented on Winston’s play, focusing in on his deep ball throwing.
