Bucs quarterback Jameis Winston is in a critical contract year and is learning a
new offense for the first time since arriving in Tampa Bay in 2015.
PewterReport.com will chronicle each one of Winston’s practices during camp
in the Winston Watch.

Tampa Bay quarterback Jameis Wiston entered the fourth day of training camp on Monday still looking for a day of practice to hang his hat on. To his credit, the Bucs defense has looked much improved to this point, and as head coach Bruce Arians and some of the defensive players have said, they’re throwing everything they can at the fifth-year quarterback early on in camp.

With that said, this likely Winston’s best day yet. He still had his faults, but he had a solid day with the exception of a few periods in between.

Winston was looked smooth through 1-on-1’s as they’re generally skewed toward the wide receivers. He was accurate and finished the period with a completion to wide receiver Justin Watson on a deep go route down the sideline.

The team then moved into multiple periods of 11-on-11 play split up by unit drills and goal line. Winston started the first period of 11-on-11’s well, hitting most of the passes he should, but missing other passes low or behind receivers, while finding some big plays to Mike Evans and and Breshad Perriman

Winston did have one big mishap in the period though, throwing his first interception of the day when he sailed a pass straight into the hands of rookie safety Mike Edwards on a miscommunication with Evans.

Moving on to red zone drills Winston saw his worst struggles of the day, taking three throws to score from the 10-yard line and failing to connect on any of them. After Blaine Gabbert and Ryan Griffin got their reps, Winston slid back under center and was at least able to end the period on a high note with a touchdown pass to Watson in the flat.

Then it was back to 11-on-11’s where Winston again started strong period. He finally looked to get in somewhat of a rhythm, spreading the ball around well but finding Chris Godwin, who had a big day, time after time for big completions.

In his worst stretch of the day, the Bucs finished the practice with a period of simulated football where the first- and second-team offense and defense would face each other drive for drive. Winston began the period with some completions to begin rolling but would give up possession on a what-were-you-thinking interception to defensive end Jeremiah Ledbetter on an attempted screen pass.

After Blaine Gabbert led the second-team down the short field for a field goal, Winston took the field again. He nearly gave up possession again on another screen pass that was jumped by Lavonte David, but was lucky to just keep the drive alive. He only converted one first down before failing to move the chains again, leading to a punt, to end the day.
