During each week of the 2020 NFL season, The Athletic’s Arif Hasan pours over tape and data from every NFL game, working feverishly to determine who The Athletic’s Team of the Week should be. Now at the midseason point of the 2020 campaign, Hasan has released The Athletic’s Midseason Players of the Year, with five Buccaneers making the cut.
Headlining the list was Tom Brady, who has been utterly brilliant in steering the Bucs to a 6-2 record. Brady has completed 66 percent of his passes for 2,189 yards and 20 touchdowns to just four interceptions. Brady has also been sacked just ten times while completing 17 passes of 20 yards or more, good for 2nd in the NFL per Pro Football Focus.
Two offensive linemen made Hasan’s cut, including left guard Ali Marpet and rookie right tackle Tristan Wirfs. Marpet is pushing hard for his first Pro Bowl bid, allowing zero sacks this season, while Wirfs’ debut campaign could not have gone much better after eight games, surrendering just a single sack.
On the defensive side of the ball, cornerback Carlton Davis and linebacker Lavonte David were recognized after outstanding starts to the 2020 season. Davis is tied for the league lead in interceptions with four and first in pass breakups with 13. David’s 60 tackles are good enough for 13th in the NFL, but seven of those stops have been for loss, tied for 6th best among off-ball linebackers. David has also been marvelous on passing downs with an interception and four pass breakups to go with 1.5 sacks.
Linebacker Devin White and cornerback Jamel Dean were listed as Honorable Mentions.
