According to Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer, who made an appearance on the Colin Cowherd Show on Monday, the Buccaneers included Bruce Arians’ doctor as part of the interview process with the former Arizona Cardinals head coach during the weekend. Wanting to hire Arians to replace head coach Dirk Koetter, Tampa Bay general manager Jason Licht had the 66-year old Arians take a full physical before he considered offering Arians the job as Tampa Bay’s head coach.

Arians has had several health issues occur as he’s gotten older, starting with prostate cancer in 2007. In 2013 he was treated for skin cancer on his nose. During Arizona’s 2016 season, Arians was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma, which is a form of kidney cancer. Arians was also briefly hospitalized in November of 2016 with chest pains.

Arians was cancer-free when he returned to the Cardinals to coach in 2017, which would be his last season before retiring to spend more time with his family.

“Now I feel great,” told AZCardinals.com in the spring of 2017. “My energy has returned. I’m told I’m cancer-free again. I’m ready for at least one more season of NFL football – maybe more.

“Moving forward, I want to be a beacon of hope for others struggling with cancer,” Arians said. “My fight is their fight. I’m not coaching for myself in 2017; I’m coaching for everyone who’s dealing with cancer. This is my charge.”
