While the Bucs aren’t expected to go crazy in free agency this season, they will be looking to upgrade a number of positions. PewterReport.com takes a look at each unit over the next week, showcasing which players Tampa Bay could lose, and which players might replace them, including our Bucs’ Best Bets.
WIDE RECEIVERS:
2019 Bucs Free Agents: Adam Humphries
Humphries had a career year last season, catching 76 passes for 816 yards and five touchdowns. He posted career highs in all three categories, and Humphries significantly boosted his asking price with all of those numbers. He was clearly an important target for Jameis Winston, and established himself well as a reliable possession receiver in the slot. With that said, Humphries was still the number four receiver on the Bucs depth chart behind Mike Evans, DeSean Jackson and Chris Godwin while also fighting for targets with tight ends O.J. Howard and Cam Brate. There have been reports that Humphries is looking for a payday in the $8-10 million range, which is a bit steep for a third-string receiver if Tampa Bay decides to let go of Jackson. Is Humphries worth that amount of money for not even cracking 1,000 yards? And how much higher is his ceiling? Humphries has done everything asked of him and is great in the locker room, but the drop off from his eventual replacement in Tampa Bay may not be that significant.

Overview: Many of the receivers listed above are a nice compliment as a No. 2 or 3 receiver on a team that already has a dominant No. 1. These players all have a wealth of experience and talent, and many of them have a something to offer that a team might not have, whether it be size or speed. The Bucs already have their top two receivers with Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, so they don’t need to break the bank on a top guy to fill a void, unless that’s to retain their own player in Humphries – if they can knock down his asking price.
Bucs’ Best Bet: Adam Humphries
This all comes down to whether or not another team will meet the salary that Humphries would like to receive north of $8 million. If that price comes down, Humphries would most likely return back to the Bucs. There’s obvious familiarity between both parties that would fit best considering there’s no worry of gelling with new teammates. Should Humphries choose another destination, the Bucs may turn to Justin Watson and Bobo Wilson to fill the slot role if they’re confident enough in each receiver’s abilities. Watson is a second-year receiver from Penn, who played a big special teams role, and Wilson will be entering his third year out of Florida State, where he’s spent most of his career on the practice squad, but has played five career games with one touchdown. He also was a teammate of Jameis Winston with Seminoles. Outside of these options, if the Bucs were to pickup another receiver in free agency, it would have to come on the cheap because of their current salary cap restraints. Look for a speedy, agile receiver such as Brown or Nelson – both of whom played for Bruce Arians in Arizona – if they try to replace Humphries with a cheaper player.
