Bruce Arians is all about size and speed when it comes to his wide receivers, and at 6-foot-3, 215 pounds, with 4.4 speed, Justin Watson fits that mold to a tee.

A fifth-round draft pick out of Penn in 2018, Watson began last season inactive but quickly found a role on nearly every aspect of the special teams’ unit. His lone catch came for five yards against Cincinnati, but now in his second year he’s primed to find his niche on offense. He spoke about the Bucs’ new offensive system and how his role both as an outside receiver and in the slot could make an impact at his media availability on Sunday.

“I think it’s about 50/50 between the slot and outside,” Watson said. “That’s kind of something I’ve always tried to do, to learn all of the positions. The old saying goes, the more you can do, and it kind of really applies to that offense. So I’m just helping out wherever I’m needed.”

A hybrid role that could be moved around the field and attack the defense in multiple ways was how Larry Fitzgerald flourished in Arians’ offense back with Arizona and Watson believes that he can be used in a similar fashion. Being from Pittsburgh, with Fitzgerald playing his college ball at Pitt, Watson has always been a fan of and molded his game after the future Hall of Famer.

“It’s been pretty cool,” Watson said. “He’s a guy that I looked up to as a kid and now watching it in the film room, running all the same routes that he runs, it’s pretty awesome.

Watson battled for fifth on the depth chart last year behind Mike Evans, DeSean Jackson, Chris Godwin and Adam Humphries, and while the Bucs added Breshad Perriman as a deep threat, the departure of Humphries and Jackson has left a noticeable void in the receivers room. The two wideouts combined for 10 total touchdowns and nearly 1,600 receiving yards, and now that production will likely fall on the shoulders of Perriman, Watson and rookie Scotty Miller to keep things rolling. With Watson’s versatile skill set he could be a guy that helps remedy both losses.
