On Monday the Bucs held the first of four straight practices in Tampa in preparation for Saturday’s preseason game at home against Kansas City. Temperatures were in the low 90s under sunny skies on a very hot day with very little breeze.

Scott Reynolds takes a look at the list of studs and duds from the action on Monday with Matt Matera contributing to this report.

Studs From Day 12 Of Bucs Training Camp

CB Jacob Parrish

With Zyon McCollum still out due to an injury, Parrish was easily the Bucs’ top cornerback on Monday with at least three pass breakups in practice. Parrish smothered every receiver he covered, including blanketing Ted Hurst and swatting away two passes intended for the rookie receiver. At 5-foot-10, Parrish gives up six inches in size to Hurst, but the rookie struggled to get open during Monday’s practice.

OLB David Walker

Walker’s ridiculous sack streak continued on Monday as he looped inside for a sack on Baker Mayfield, who couldn’t escape the second-year pass rusher. Walker collected a sack in each of the team’ joint practices in New Jersey against the Jets, and Monday’s sack makes it 12 straight practices in which he’s captured a quarterback. Walker didn’t have a sack in the preseason opener on Friday night, but he did have a pressure on quarterback Bailey Zappe, which forced an errant throw that was picked off and returned for a touchdown by undrafted free agent rookie Ayden Garnes.

OLB Yaya Diaby

Rookie Rueben Bain Jr. has been commanding a lot of the headlines throughout training camp, and deservedly. Tampa Bay’s first-round pick has been as good as advertised against both the run and the pass. Yaya Diaby, who is entering a contract year after leading the Bucs in sacks in two of his three years in red and pewter, turned it up a notch on Monday and recorded back-to-back sacks in practice against Justin Skule, who was still filling in for Tristan Wirfs at left tackle. Even though Wirfs was back at practice on Monday in full pads, he only participated in individual drills and was held out of team periods.

OT Tristan Wirfs, CB Benjamin Morrison And S JJ Roberts

The trio of Wirfs, Morrison and Roberts returned to practice for the first time on Monday. Wirfs and Roberts have been out the entire camp with injuries. The All-Pro left tackle strained his hamstring during the conditioning run the day before the team’s first practice and missed the first three weeks. Roberts has been out of action and missed the entire offseason program and the first three weeks after tearing his ACL last August in a joint practice with the Steelers.

Morrison injured his hamstring (again) during the OTAs and missed the mandatory mini-camp and the first three weeks of camp from a team period standpoint. Morrison has only participated in about half of the practices so far, and when he has suited up he’s been limited to just individual period work. But Monday he was eased into action in a few team drills and managed to stay healthy.

The return of all three of these Buccaneers was a welcomed sight.

Bucs Backups On Defense

The offense had a decent day in the red zone with a couple of touchdowns, but Todd Bowles defense came to play on Monday. There were a couple of takeaways by the defense, the first of which came from inside linebacker John Bullock, who came up with a diving interception – his third in training camp – off a deflected Jalon Daniels pass at the line of scrimmage. Rookie defensive tackle DeMonte Capehart had the deflection.

The next turnover came when undrafted free agent outside linebacker Yasir Holmes forced a fumble on rookie receiver Dean Patterson IV after he hauled in a wide receiver screen pass. Rookie inside linebacker Josiah Trotter recovered the loose ball for the defense.

Duds From Day 12 Of Bucs Training Camp

OT Marshall Foerner

Foerner has had a rough training camp and has been beaten for quite a few sacks in practice this August. On Monday he was playing right tackle and gave up a sack of Jalon Daniels to Al-Quadin Muhammad. That prompted the coaches to make an immediate player switch, pulling Foerner and replacing him Elijah Klein, who sees more time inside at guard and center.

WR Ted Hurst III

Outside of catching a short touchdown pass in the red zone against Benjamin Morrison, Hurst did very little during Monday’s practice. With Emeka Egbuka, Jalen McMillan, Tez Johnson and David Sills V still sidelined with various injuries, Hurst was once again thrown into action with the starters and was targeted often by Baker Mayfield. Unfortunately for the rookie he was blanketed in coverage by Jacob Parrish and couldn’t separate from the speedy cornerback.
