Latest Bucs Headlines

The Bucs opened up their second joint practice against the visiting Miami Dolphins in the indoor practice facility. With clouds looming, they weren’t sure whether or not they were going to be able to practice outside at all. After a brief warm up period, they transitioned to the three outside fields where 1-on-1 drill ensued.

The list of players not practicing on Wednesday was once again a long one. Safety Justin Evans, defensive tackle Vita Vea, linebacker Lavonte David, linebacker Anthony Nelson, wide receiver Scotty Miller, linebacker Corey Lynch, safety Mike Edwards, quarterback Nick Fitzgerald, offensive lineman Ruben Holcomb and wide receiver DaMarkus Lodge were on in the bucket hat brigade — meaning they were just on the sidelines.

Once the players who were participating made it outside for 1-on-1s, that’s when the real action began.

The Bucs receivers were cooking early and often when it came to the 1-on-1 drills. Tampa wide receiver Breshad Perriman got things started with a nice fade route for a touchdown.

This is the kind if role Perriman is likely going to play with the Bucs. With so many other weapons that can go over the middle or come out of the backfield, it will be Perriman’s job to be consistent as a deep threat to stretch the field.

Second-year wide out Justin Watson is also going to be a player the Bucs need in that deep wide receiver group. He’s been given more opportunities in this training camp and in this preseason to show what he can bring to the offense.

Watson is a consistent player who has reliable hands. He’s a natural big slot guy, but he’ll show us every now and then in plays like the one above that he can be a go-to guy.

It wasn’t just the first-string guys who were getting in on the action on Wednesday. Third-year wide receiver Bobo Wilson made more than one big play during practice, including a very nice one-handed catch in the corner of the end zone.

Wilson elevating his game just means another weapon for Winston this season.

But THE go-to player of the day had to be Bucs wide receiver Chris Godwin.

Godwin has been impressive all camp — he’s been impressive for two years, really. On Wednesday, he brought his best against Miami’s best.

Godwin went up against the Dolphins’ shut down corner in Xavien Howard twice in 1-on-1s. In the rep above, Godwin’s body control had Howard guessing too much (which is totally understandable in a 1-on-1 drill) and beat him for a touchdown.

In his second rep, Godwin not only gave us the play of the day, but perhaps the play of the entire training camp.

If you’re not on the Godwin train yet, you better get on, because it’s about to be full and that train is about the leave the station for good.

In the run game, it’s worth noting that running back Ronald Jones had yet another impressive day. We’re hoping we can see a bit more of RoJo in the second preseason game this Friday night and all that’s left for Jones is to put it all together in games.

Maybe this Friday he will.

White Watch – Rookie Continues To Grow, Gets Valuable Experience From Joint Practice

Bucs rookie middle linebacker Devin White is entering his first NFL training camp in Tampa Bay this season. With some high expectations for the fifth overall pick in the draft, White has already been installed as the play-caller of a brand new defense. PewterReport.com will chronicle each of White’s practices during training camp in the White Watch.

It was the second of two joint practices between the Bucs and the visiting Miami Dolphins on Wednesday, in preparation for their upcoming preseason game on Friday.

It was another chance for Devin White to get a crack at NFL talent that doesn’t play for Tampa Bay, and two joint practices allowed him and other young players to get that much needed invaluable experience before embarking on their rookie season.
Early on, White led the first-team defense and continued to show his growth as a leader in the middle. His usage when providing pressure up the middle and off the edge was in typical form on Wednesday, and he was able to show off his speed when he and defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh flushed Miami quarterback Josh Rosen out of the pocket and chased him out of bounds for a minimal gain. He also flashed across the field during the red zone period to nearly make a play in pursuit, but the ground that he covered was a statement in itself.
The one play where White did get exposed was in coverage, an area he still needs to sharpen throughout camp. Towards the end of practice, in the day’s goal line period, White was tasked with covering the running back swinging out of Miami’s backfield. White was beat and it led to a touchdown for the Dolphins in the limited period.
White’s next action will be Friday in the team’s preseason game where the starters’ action will likely be increased to two or three series in the game.
