PewterReport.com’s staff is live from Mobile, Alabama all week for the Senior Bowl. At this event, the top seniors from college football will play in front of coaches, general managers, and scouts from all 32 teams in the NFL, in the hope that their name will be called in the 2020 NFL draft.
After one day of practice, these were the players that stood out on offense for each team.
SOUTH
OT Terence Steele – Texas Tech
The Bucs are in need of a powerful offensive tackle that can block well in the run game, and that’s what Steele did. Steele has good size for his position and is fluid enough to move around well. The tackle out of Texas Tech was able to slide over adequately and engage in blocking the defender without much of an issue. Steele got his hands on the inside quickly and ever lost hold of his blocking assignment. You’re obviously supposed to win the block on a double team like in the second video, but Steele used extra force here to make sure the defensive lineman would not be involved int he play and that he could go to the second level.

WR Van Jennings – Florida
The wide receiver out of Florida made it look easy when he was trying to get open. Jennings looks confident and comfortable in his ability when he’s out looking to make a play. Jennings had defensive backs working to just stay a step behind him during individual drills. The speed that Jennings has takes the top off of the defense, and it can get him open instantly on shorter routes as well. He also showed that he can adapt on the fly when he worked with Jalen Hurts to get open over the middle of the field. It was a play where Hurts’ first read wasn’t open so he had to wait, and Jennings was able to improvise on it to get open.

QB Justin Herbert – Oregon
All that the quarterbacks do this week will be viewed under a microscope, especially when it comes to Herbert, Jalen Hurts, and Jordan Love. Herbert came out of the first day of practice at the Senior Bowl looking great after throwing pinpoint passes. It was the deep ball that really had Herbert going as he threw some dimes straight down the field and right into the hands of the receiver. Herbert was the best quarterback on the field between both teams on Tuesday.

NORTH
WR Denzel Mims – Baylor
Mims had some excellent route running during his one-on-one matchups on day one at the Senior Bowl. Mims has a good quickness to him that you wouldn’t expect to see with his size, but as you see in the first video, the defender thinks Mims is going deep, but the Baylor receiver switches it up to get open. Due to Mims’ size, he doesn’t need much of a window to get open. In the second video, Mims is off to the races after making a move towards the middle and make a ton of space between himself and the defender. It didn’t take much for him to get open, because he’s a threat to beat you deep.

WR Antonio Gandy-Golden – Liberty
Known as a receiver that can go up and get a ball vertically down the field, Gandy-Golden showed that he can have success on short and intermediate routs as well. The Liberty product is such strong individual, especially with his upper body, and he uses his power to overmatch his defender across the middle. Using his arm to move him aside and get away was just enough to give him room for the reception. Gandy-Golden also has a great ability to make the difficult catch while contested, and that’s exactly what he does in the second video. The cornerback is right on Gandy-Golden, but that didn’t stop him from making the reception. If it’s a jump ball between Gany-Golden and a defender, odds are that Gandy-Golden will make the catch.

RB Joshua Kelley – UCLA
Kelley had a strong finish to practice with some long runs to end the day. Kelley was able to cut at the right times and hit another gear to get to the second level of the defense. Teams wants a fast running back, but it’s the running backs that can see the hole open up and adjust by making a move to get out in the open is what’s important. Kelley made all the right cuts at the right time as he started off his Senior Bowl strong.
