One of the selling points on getting Tom Brady to the Bucs was that Pro Bowl receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin would be the players that he’d be throwing to. Each receiver will see the most direct impact of Brady’s presence in Tampa Bay, and that impact could include a number change for Godwin.

Even before Brady signed on the dotted line with the Bucs, many were asking the same question – “Is Chris Godwin going to give up his number for Brady if he comes to Tampa Bay?”

Brady wore the number 10 in his playing days at Michigan but has worn 12 for all 20 years with the Patriots. He’s turned “TB12” into a global brand during his historic career. Godwin also wore number 12 during his college years at Penn State and his three years in the NFL.

When speaking with Bucs reporter Casey Phillips on the Bucs Beat about Brady joining the Bucs, Godwin commented publicly for the first time about that question.

“My phone has been blowing up over the last 24 hours over twitter, instagram, phone calls, text messages – people asking me the same question,” Godwin said. “I think it will be very interesting whatever happens. We haven’t talked about it yet, we talked briefly, but hadn’t mentioned that at all. Obviously if he doesn’t want it or if he’s not making a big deal out of it, I’m definitely going to keeping it. But we’ll see how it goes, I think just out of respect for what he’s done, what he’s accomplished and just kind of the career he built for himself, we kind of got to lean into that respect. But we’ll see.”

Godwin also gave his thoughts on his initial reaction when he heard the news, and what it will be like playing with the greatest of all time.

“It was pretty crazy,” Godwin said. “I kind of heard rumors and stuff throughout the offseason about him potentially coming and the closer we got, the more real it became. I guess my first thoughts were just ‘Wow.’ Just having the opoprutintey to play with somebody that’s arguably the greatest of all time. There’s not many that got that opportunity so I’m just trying to soak it in and learn as much as I can from this guy.”

Godwin continued.

“I think that the possibilities are endless,” Godwin said. “Just having a guy that is not only as encompassing as he is, but as smart as he is, being able to come in and kind of be like a personable guy. He seems very open to helping guys learn and that’s what I’m here for. Every time I’m around guys who are really successful I try to soak up as much as I can to make sure that I’m always learning from him and always bettering myself. Football aside, I’m looking forward to just kind of picking his brain and trying to add something to my game and to my life to keep bettering myself.”
