After five years with the Bucs, the organization’s first overall pick in the 2015 draft, Tampa Bay will be moving on from quarterback Jameis Winston after landing Tom Brady on a two-year contract earlier in the week.

Winston was more than just a quarterback in Tampa, he had become a large part of the city itself. Winston was the face of the Bucs, built a life in Tampa, started a family in Tampa and frequently worked within the community through Jameis Winston’s Dream Forever Foundation.

With his future destination still to be determined, Winston wished Tampa and Bucs Fans farewell via Twitter on Saturday.

    • He will improve – the only question is how much and when. Put yourself in his position, going from 21 million plus, to probably less than 7 million on a one year prove it or even less as a backup. In real money to the rest of us, imagine going from 20-25 per hour to 9-10. Just a comparison in value – he obviously made more last year than all but the top 1% will make in a lifetime. Wish you the best JW! A year or two on the bench without pressure, analyzing the finer points, while not being the “savior” may benefit you more than anything could. Unfortunately, due to circumstances, you won’t be able to learn behind the GOAT – but there will be an opportunity out there to learn, shine, realize that the QB is only a small part of the overall team. You will be stronger mentally, you will have a chance via injury, salary cap concerns, etc., to get another chance. Thank you for your brilliance, learn from your mistakes, and become another QB with a second chance who has the opportunity to become great as you have always dreamed. Except when you play against the Bucs, may you become what your special tools can drive you to!

  3. There are two big problems going on here that paying fans should be concerned about. the First one is, BA and Licht took a whole offseason, pre-season and regular season to figure out Jamies was not the guy and he four years of tape for them to review before they even began. This is their failure more than it is Jamies’s failure. Licht made him the top pick in the draft, now he is basically cut?

The second problem is, Brady does not have many years left, so for me, this clearly signals they have to take a QB with the first pick. That means Love or Herbert. Brady’s biggest contribution to the Bucs will be grooming the next QB. Let’s say everything perfect and we win the Super Bowl this year. Do you think anyone will are if in three years, we are 2 and 14 with a sorry QB?

  4. Despite some of our Buc Loser fans..Bashing him, Jameis gives a classy Farwell. I’m not worried about Jameis in the least. He will be just fine. He is nowhere near finished. I get this feeling he will achieve great things in the NFL. Not all people succeed right off the bat. As my grandad use to say, People are like flowers. Some bloom early, some late..Some not at all. I think Jameis best days are ahead of him. He luvs the game and is not a quitter. Sometimes in life, A shock to the system does the heart good on the long run. Good Luck Jameis.

    • Which is imperative we move up in the draft to get a QB of the future in round 2 or find a diamond in the rough who can sit and learn for two years. Most QB’s drafted in the first round are failures – JW is as BA says “an unknown quantity”. Brady was drafted in the 6 round, may we be so lucky to find our future “unknown quantity”.

  11. As far as WE know Jameis has had no inquirees. His agent may have. The strategy may be to wait until a starter of a contender go down. That would give Jameis a stronger position to negotiate a price.I loved his good stuff. But close games I always had a fear something bad could happen.Too often bad did occur.I thought that would change but it did not.A QB cannot lead the league in picks and pick 6s and be called successful. I guess this will change the draft strategy.Rolling the dice again for a quality QB.

  14. Correct me if I’m misreading what Jameis is saying, but if he is saying he thinks he is ready to lead a team to the SB, with the way he is currently playing, he hasn’t learned anything. And it shows the decision by Arians to let him walk was the correct one. Jameis…after a couple years of clipboard holding, and upon some self-reflection, you may understand that just “ballin” isn’t enough. Some totally unexplained throws every game or two is poison…and you have to find a way to work that out of your game if you ever want to be a franchise QB or lead a team to the Superbowl.

While this is probably the jolt he needs to get him to change his playing style, the guy has exceptional talents, is a dedicated, hard working winner. He’ll be back. I wish him the best in life.
Not sure he will get the correct chance on another team in football, he had weapons here that made him look really good at times!
I truly believe he would make it in baseball, I saw a video of him playing baseball at ASU,

Greg, BA and Licht knew they wanted Brady already, they took the entire offseason to make 100% sure it wasn’t a mistake to let go of our 2015 #1 pick, that’s not a problem that’s doing the work. I liked Winston and hoped like crazy that he would work out, and if even love for him to be our backup for a few million and see if he can’t learn somethin behind Brady, but if he has to go somewhere else I hope he figured it out.

I wonder if his February comment is eluding to him maybe going to New England? That would be a dream scenario for him but not sure how he would do with no weapons and another shorty Oline.

  23. Time simply just ran Out!
In this league you only get so much time and for Winston time ran out. I can definitively say that he waisted 3+ years with Dirk Koetter as his HC, But last season with BA he was given a clean slate and even though there were questionable calls by Byron Leftwich there was really no excuse for how things ended down the stretch…

Instead of owning his mistakes after losing to the Falcons from a pick 6 in OT Winston acted as if he had just led his team on a playoff run. That single moment showed that Winston cared more about his individual stats than he did about the other 52 men in that locker room who gave their all to Win that Game….

Winston may go on to have a successful career but he was “Not Ready” to lead the Tampa Bay Buccaneers!!!!

  25. I don’t feel bad that Winston is gone. He had a 5-year tryout with the Bucs, made millions of $$$, and it didn’t work out for either party. He was the number one pick in the draft, but didn’t play like one. He made too many mistakes and bad decisions both on and off the field. He pretty much stymied the franchise for 5 years! Don’t blame Licht for the pick, it was a joint decision of ownership, Lovie, and Licht. I would have picked Mariota, but we’ll never know how that would have worked out. Don’t forget at the time the Bucs were changing the culture and bringing in people with values and integrity. And they drafted Winston!

I hope that Pittsburgh picks him up. He can study under Big Ben for a couple of years, and then maybe he gets another chance. And I think Tomlin would be a good coach for Winston.

As for Brady, if you watched any Pats games at all in 2019, you saw a great QB with no one to throw to except Edelman. Concerns about a 43 yo QB are valid, but let’s wait and see. I for one expect this to be a great year for the Bucs. I have far better expectations than if Winston were still here. We got season tickets back in January based on the 2020 opponents. Getting Brady at QB is a bonus. Looking forward to some quality football at RayJay this fall!

We basically lost a whole season on a guy BA told us for a whole year, was capable of doing the job. Please do not be a sucker. Licht and BA run this team and when they suck the buck stops with them. They put a guy on the field last year who threw 30 interceptions. Great! Jamies is fired….but what about the incompetence that got him hired and put him on the field last year in the first place? 31. Like everyone else, I enjoyed watching Jameis make plays few could achieve or even attempt. Sadly, he often followed them up with absolutely mind-boggling ones that contributed to defeats. He was the gift that kept on giving.

The 2019 finale against the Falcons was a prime example. With less than a minute remaining in the half, Jameis takes the team the length of the field for a TD to Perriman. Then after missed FG’s kept the Falcons in the game, we go to OT. First play Jameis throws a lazy pass to Brate and it is easily picked for a sudden-death defeat. There’s little doubt that the team and coaching staff were even more frustrated than us fans.

I wish Jameis well. I’m hoping he ends up with my hometown Steelers since his style of play resembles that of Big Ben. I’m pretty sure the youngster has been humbled a bit and lost a degree of confidence. Who of us wouldn’t be shaken by failing after trying so hard…..too hard.

Bringing in Tom Brady as our QB is obviously a short-term solution. It’s goal is two pronged. Rejuvenate an apathetic fan base and become a contender for our hometown Super Bowl. Hopefully, TB12 will accomplish both feats with what many are saying is a very talented roster.

The prediction that he will get injured simply because of his age is absurd. Young QB’s (Teddy Bridgewater) get hurt too. One doesn’t have to be Nostradamus to guess that the Bucs will be looking hard at the QB position in the Draft either this year or next. Who better than Brady to mentor the next “savior”?

  33. Seems to be the majority of commenters and comment voters here at this site are Winston fans (which is NOT the same thing as Bucs fans). Unlike the overall Tampa Bay Bucs fan base, which has voted against Winston with their butts (as in, being not in the seats at RayJay) for the last several seasons of utter disappointment.

Winston was NEVER a fan pleaser for the Bucs. Local fan opinion polls in 2015 favored Marcus Mariota as the #1 pick. Say what you will about Mariota, who may not have set the league on fire, but he also didn’t set the all time record for picks and pick-sixes either. He suffered through a string of bad coaches, including a new offensive coordinator and a new offense every single season he was with the Titans, and he never had the receivers that Winston has had the pleasure of throwing to. In any case, Marcus Mariota at least has a job in the NFL today, unlike Winston, and he is now working for Jon Gruden.

I strongly opposed Winston’s drafting in 2015, and strongly supported cutting him each of the last two seasons. For the same reasons he just lost his job. Winston has a powerful arm, but little football sense. In pro football, football sense is much more important than arm strength. I also opposed Winston because I believe he raped the woman at FSU and got away with it because the local PD was colluding with the FSU football program which is the biggest business in Tallahassee outside of educating students. Then Winston went to the pros, and not surprisingly he sexually assaulted another woman who was just doing her job, and the league gave him a four game suspension but the Bucs should have canned his ass right then and there.

Very glad to see Winston leaving the Bucs. I don’t wish him well, nor do I wish him ill either – for five years I simply wished him gone, and now finally he is gone.

As for what happens to Winston after this, I could not possibly care less.

What I care about is seeing the Buccaneers succeed for a change.

I really don’t give a flying fig about what the Winston fanboys think of me (they always down-vote my comments – just because, no matter what I write). Screw them. If they don’t like the Bucs now because the Bucs canned their hero, then they are all most welcome to leave, like right now.

Those who like me simply want the Bucs to succeed, and are hopeful that Tom Brady’s arrival will be a turn in the right direction, well, nobody knows today but we certainly have good reason to feel optimistic this off-season.

Yeah Scubog it’s “absurd” to think a 43 year old with little mobility would have greater chance to be injured. Lol.

I’d be worried about Bridgewater too he’s young still but small guy and already damn near ended his career with that knee.

Then again you may regret the unceremonious release of a pretty talented QB in Winston. A guy that could run around and make plays when his protection broke down and get big yards in that fun and gun offense of yours. Last year Brady threw the equivalent of one game worth of passes out of bounds.
Better have a good line and a reliable dumb down guy. Brady gets nervous and the ball goes to the dump down guy or sailing out of bounds.
