The Bucs suffered a loss in the game falling to the Chicago Bears 20-19 on Thursday night. But it was an injury to one of their top players that could prove to be the more impactful loss as the season goes on. Bruce Arians confirmed on Friday morning that nose tackle Vita Vea broke his leg late in fourth quarter after Devin White landed on him while both players were making a tackle.
Along with speaking on the significant role that Vea played this year for the defense, Arians also discussed the lack of discipline that the Bucs have shown by committing 11 penalties for 109 yards in the game.
Here is a full transcript from Arians’ press conference with the media.
(On an injury update for Vita Vea)
“Vita’s got a broken leg and might miss the rest of the season. Big loss because you lose players like O.J. and Vita, you plug the next man in but they’re not the same. I hate it for him, he was having such a great year.”
(On if Tom Brady forgot it was fourth down on the last play)
“I mean, I don’t know how to answer it for him. We all knew it was fourth down. He saw what he saw.”
(On what can the coaching staff do to alleviate mistakes)
“We just got to do a better job of coaching, it all falls on the staff. Mistakes that we’re making in ball games that shouldn’t be made, and they’re not every week, there are just games where there’s like a bunch of them. That was one of those games that there was a bunch of them. Penalties, technique errors, things that we should have coached better.”
(On if the loss is not all on the players but on the coaches)
“Huge part, huge part. It starts with me.”
(On being undisciplined, how they fix it and if that means getting new players)
“No, it’s just a matter of just continuing harping on it. Getting your head around on the deep balls and not panic a little bit there. Offsides, better concentration. Again, it falls on me.”
(On the second half drive with all the penalties, how much it hurts continuity)
“That’s just one drive. The next drive was a solid drive, a couple times we got down there and didn’t get touchdowns and ended up kicking field goals because of penalties and sacks. But that one drive was just one of those flag driven drives, I don’t agree with all of them but they were thrown.”
(On how much do they need the extra days off to recover from injuries)
“It’s a good break for us because of the injuries. Hopefully we’ll get some guys back offensively, we’re obviously not getting back O.J. or Vita. It gives us a little bit of time to plan on which direction we want to get in.”
(On if Tyler Johnson can compete for the third receiver role)
“I think he’s getting better and better. He’s not at Scotty’s level right now, Scotty does some things, we got to get him the ball some more, he was open last night. Tyler’s getting better and better and I really like where his progress is having missed so much time.”
(On deciding on his timeouts at the end of the first half)
We wanted to save as much time as we could for the two-minute offense. Get a field goal, we got really close.”
(On having so many injuries, was it difficult to draw up a game plan from that standpoint)
“Short weeks are never easy. It’d be easier had they been able to practice full speed and I think Tom get to see some guys run some routes full speed rather than everything being walkthroughs But Thursday night ball games, you get hung up on injuries sometimes with Thursday night games because you would have some guys on Sunday, but you don’t get to practice with them for Thursday night ball games. I think the guys that stepped in, I thought they did a good job.”
(On Scotty Miller not getting targeted)
“I think they just went to Mike. He’s [Tom Brady] got the ball and both of them go deep and he threw one to Mike and Scotty had beat his guy pretty good. Last time he went to Scotty for a touchdown or a big play, that’s just some of those things.”
(On Ryan Succop’s consistency and Ronald Jones having another 100-yard game)
“I think RoJo, he’s playing at an extremely high level. I still can’t believe he didn’t get his touchdown when he made that catch, but that is the rule that you don’t get that forward progress after they blow the whistle. He’s running the ball well, making people miss, second level making people miss. Ryan, he’s solid, that’s his forte. I’m surprised he missed the one here when he misjudged the wind. Both those guys are playing consistent.”
(On Jamel Dean bouncing back in the second half)
“Second half he was good. I thought he had a pick-six, he broke on it really good, he just didn’t quite get there, he broke it up. Just get his head around there on Jimmy Graham and he probably plays a pretty good game and bat that ball away.”
(On how good of a season was Vita Vea having up to this point)
“I don’t think there was a better nose tackle out there. He’s getting sacks, he was getting pressure up the middle, we got hurt on a great hustle play on the side going back and forth and it was really friendly fire that got his leg. He was playing really really well.”
(On how important is this stretch of all the primetime games)
“Just get the guys healthy. You play them when they’re scheduled. Obviously we got a lot of night games coming up and big games, every single one is going to be huge the rest of the way.”
(On if he has a feel if Chris Godwin will be ready for the Packers game)
“It’s way too early. I’m hoping he can do something by next Thursday.”
(On if Tristan Wirfs suffered an injury during the game)
“No, he’s fine.”
(On Rakeem Nunez-Roches stepping in for Vea)
“He’s playing good. He’ll step in there, he’ll be that guy and we’ll see what else happens. Right now it’d be Nacho.”
(On if this loss stings a little more since they had a lead late)
“Yeah, anytime you have the ball with 2:50, whatever, 2:56 left and the lead, you’re anticipating winning the ball game whether it’s the offense running out the clock or the defense stopping them. It stings a little bit more that way.”
